SPIELBERG, KATZENBERG, GEFFEN, AMBANI SCORE BOX OFFICE GOLD WITH “I AM NUMBER 4″

Nikki Finke reports that sci-fi flick, I Am Number 4 could open with $8 million Friday and $28M-$30M for the 4-day holiday weekend.

Warner Bros’ thriller Unknown with Liam Neeson in the lead is said to be having a good tussle for box office gold, sitting in the no.2 position.

Fox’s Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son is No. 3.

I Am Number 4 is a Dreamworks production for Steven Spielberg, David KatzenbergDavid Geffen as led by Anil Ambani too with Indian investment capitol.

Good luck.

The premise of I Am Number 4 via Fandango is: “A teenage fugitive with an incredible secret races to stay one step ahead of the mysterious forces seeking to track and destroy him in this sci-fi action thriller from director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye).

With three dead and one on the run, the race to find the elusive Number Four begins.

Outwardly normal teen John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) never gets too comfortable in the same identity, and along with his guardian, Henri (Timothy Olyphant), he is constantly moving from town to town — the perpetual new kid in a series of strangely familiar schools.

Despite the fact that his nomadic lifestyle has made it difficult to form meaningful connections, John experiences the joy of first love with a beautiful young woman (Dianna Agron) and begins to unlock his full potential after arriving with Henri in a small Ohio town.

With each passing day, John gains a stronger grasp on his extraordinary new powers, and his bond to the beings that share his fantastic fate grows stronger.”

The movie trailer’s scriipting reads – “There were nine of us who escaped. Number 1 was killed in Malaysia. Number 2 was murdered in England. Number 3 was hunted down in Kenya. Before they come for the others, they’ll come for me. I am Number 4.”

To watch the trailer, press play below. Mid Colombia Tri City Herald also shares thoughts on this sci fi flick too. Their comments can be read here.

CAPTAIN AMERICA’S CHRIS EVANS FURTHERS THE SUPER HERO NARRATIVE

“If it looks strikingly different than the classic Captain America get-up — bold colors, flimsy material, a mask with weird little wings — that’s definitely by design. ‘You can’t really take him seriously in his flag pajamas,’ director Joe Johnston told EW in last year’s exclusive first look cover story on the film. So instead, the hero’s main uniform was designed to resemble a tricked-out airman’s jumpsuit, the ‘A’ on the helmet and star on the chest modest in size, the colors muted. It took Evans about 25 minutes to suit up. ‘He likes to do it all by himself,’ explained costume designer Anna Sheppard. ‘I think it helps him feel like a super hero.’”–Enetertainment Weekly.

Dress ups and America go hand in hand when creating super hero narratives. Chris is doing okay at it so far.

TAYLOR LAUTNER’S STAR POWER, HOLLYWOOD 2011

Taylor Lautner: The only teen action movie star to clearly make it through Hollywood’s quick sand celebrity hoops in 2010 by playing a teen werewolf has managed to keep his newest relaysh with Lily Collins out of the public eye, at least compared to his tour-de-paparazzi-force courtship with Taylor Swift.

This kid never made the top ten in Hollywood this year, but still proves he can kick above his weight in Tinsel Town. He’s a symbol that teen lads can do anything if they work hard, get lucky breaks, if authors write popular book series with teens in mind that then get adapted to film; and with the right parenting behind them.

Lautner’s upcoming movie work in Hollywood sees him cast in the film: Abduction (Post Production); The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I & Breaking Dawn Part II as Jacob Black.

MOVIE HOBBIT WOOL by DANIEL RADCLIFFE AND EMMA WATSON

I’m sure some people will see me as Harry Potter forever and I’m truly fine with that, says Daniel Radcliffe about his decade of playing the boy wizard over eight films. I could so see Daniel playing a hobbit too. Or a villain, just for variety in his next film.

He has an audience like very few 21 year olds can claim and both Dan and Emma Watson, just keep getting better onscreen with each film. So talented.

OMOTO RACECOURSE AND REMEMBERING LOST PIKE RIVER MINERS WHILE A NATION HAS A MINUTE OF SILENCE

[Satellite image courtesy of 3D New Zealand]

BLOOMBERG NEWS–New Zealand will pause for a two- minute silence today to remember the 29 Pike River miners presumed killed by explosions at a West Coast mine last month.

Prime Minister John Key asked the country to observe a moment of silence at 2 p.m. local time to mark the start of a remembrance service near Greymouth, the South Island town about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Pike River. The service will be held at the Omoto Racecourse which opened in 1867, almost 20 years after coal was first discovered in the area.

The service will be attended by government officials from New Zealand and outside the country, including Martin Ferguson, Australia’s minister of resources and energy, and British High Commissioner Victoria Treadell, according to a statement.

“This tragedy has affected all of us,” Key said in yesterday’s statement.

CHRIS PINE IS A-LISTED – FIRST BOX OFFICE STATS THIS WEEKEND

In the studio system, the workings are very much set. More Washington than innovative and welcoming of new people. Hollywood risks stagnation. The savior of Hollywood is young talent, proven enough to no longer be a risk, tougher than most for enduring the system, for convincing the town that they had the staying power to stick around enough to hold their own. Chris Pine is one such man. Listed as new A-List along with Karl Urban of New Zealand who follows closely beside and behind Pine. Hollywood 2010′s.

True fact: The box office rules this town. You can make an art house film – but the town doffs it hat to box office’s big hitters. Of these people (Sir Peter Jackson and James Cameron being two) the wheels of Hollywood spin. Who cities of people are fed. Here’s the latest takings from Nikki Finke:

Chris Pine Covers Hollywood Reporter: Unstoppable star Chris Pine graces the cover of the second weekly edition of The Hollywood Reporter, on stands Wednesday.

Pine is just one of a handful of hot, young Hollywood lights on which the industry is banking to replace the vaunted old guard of box office stars.

Between now and summer 2012, audiences will see Pine, along with a small group of young actors, pushing — and being pushed — into blockbuster star-making terrain.

“We need these kids desperately,” one studio producer tells THR. “And there happens to be a crop of five or six of them that are actually filling the role.”

And clearly the new status has its bonuses. As Pine tells THR, “To have just a bit more power to say yes and no is very appealing and intoxicating.”

VINTAGE ROOTS STILL – CELEBRATING AMERICAN PROGRESS

Hollywood, Calif–We’ve come a long way in America, since we found the need to string a man up in a public place and flog him. His crime for a flogging?

At times he disobeyed our own need for our desire to increase production at a rate we wanted, in order to appease a lazy sense of entitlement.

In the process we once killed our fathers. Thankfully that’s changed.

CLINT EASTWOOD’S HEREAFTER FILM, STARRING MATT DAMON

Warner Brothers, the most successful studio in Hollywood the last decade, cranks up their P.R machine today, with the release of fresh pictures, from Clint Eastwood‘s Hereafter view.

Reports Beyond Hollywood, “Hereafter” tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue–collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near–death experience that shakes her reality.

And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might—or must—exist in the hereafter.”

I believe in life after Hollywood, life after rugby football too. I also believe in the hereafter. Sounds like an interesting film, no? Will you be going to see Clint and Matt’s new film? Kinda deep, as Eastwood’s films can be. This shot, is film noir lighting almost, meets country. It’s all about Matt’s pondering expression to evoke thought. Eastwood casts the shadow of Matt’s body as a projection on a wall, to denote the spirit inside the man, for this film.

When we die, where does our spirit go? To the hereafter? A good film, already for raising this question from Hollywood.

ANTHONY COLEMAN STARS IN “LOUIS”, A BLACK AND WHITE SLIENT MUSICAL, WITH HINTS OF COLOR

Spielburg-esque Schindler’s List filmmaking techniques meets the life and music of Louis Armstrong?

That wouldn’t be too bad a premise for a film perhaps? Anthony Coleman plays the young Louis Armstong in Dan Pritzker‘s Louis, set in 1907 New Orleans. The theater band plays original and period pieces. Wynton Marsalis has composed the music of this film. Academy acclaimed Hungarian cinematographer, Vilmos Zsigmond creates the moving image in this film.

A CHINESE SMILE FROM BETH JACOB CONGREGATION

The hand that passed a card at Beth Jacob congregation on Saturday chose a moment when everyone was singing Psalm 23 – The Lord is My Shepherd in Hebrew at the time. They sung with genuine joy. The moment was real, yet surreal–like the best entertainment always is in life. The card was offered in a choice of Spanish, Russian or English.

Always trying to improve things (aka just being plain difficult), I asked if there were any available in Chinese? Anyway–here’s the message.

A smile costs nothing but gives much. It reaches those who recieve, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory sometimes lasts a lifetime.

None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and no one is so poor that he cannot be made richer by it.

A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged. A smile brings sunshine to the sad, and is nature’s best antidote for trouble.

Yet, it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is of no value to anyone, unless given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as no one needs a smile as much as he who has no more to give.

[Like a smile, pass this card on].

ZAC EFRON for CHARLIE ST. CLOUD

Zac Efron is on the promotional trail for his next film, Charlie St. Cloud. According to IMDB, the film ‘is about a young man overcome by grief at the death of his younger brother. So much so that he takes a job as caretaker of the cemetery in which his brother is buried.

‘Charlie has a special lasting bond with his brother though, as he can see him. Charlie meets up with his brother (Sam) each night to play catch and talk. Then, a girl comes into Charlie’s life and he must choose between keeping a promise he made to Sam, or going after the girl he loves Written by CBlodg

Already, I think the Sam of this story–would have wanted Zac’s character Charlie–to pursue love–part of the purpose of life. That’s sort of a no brainer. Looks like a sweet film.

MOVIE STILL: ROBERT PATTINSON for BEL AMI

Twilight superstar, Robert Pattinson‘s first movie still from Bel Ami the movie has arrived.

Because Robert is a very grounded UK lad, I can see why this film would appeal to him. The movie provides a very good commentary of his own life–where Pattinson has found himself catapulted into the fame game of celebrity.

Bel Ami stars the amazing, Uma Thurman (Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction fame) and Christina Ricci (Monster) in a plotline that goes a little like this: ‘Directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, the film is an erotically charged story of ambition, power and seduction. Georges Duroy (Robert Pattinson), travels through 1890s Paris, from cockroach ridden garrets to opulent salons, using his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute’s embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties, in a world where politics and media jostle for influence, where sex is power and celebrity an obsession.’

This movie sounds riveting already. If you are over 18 that is. Nice to see a good period film being made and with such a good cast. As Uma was originally in Dangerous Liaisons –this film sounds like the DL for the 2010s decade.

Alright, here’s the movie trailer, film poster and movie stills from the upcoming film Centurian. It looks like a nice little build up to Russell Crowe‘s Robin Hood Prince of Thieves movie, that is opening Cannes film festival next month in France. Centurian looks pretty gruesome. Like a good battle film of good triumphing over evil.

Here’s the synopsis: “Synopsis: Based on the legend of the Ninth Legion, an army of 3000 unstoppable Roman warriors who vanished without trace, Centurion is the tale of their vicious conflict with a murderous adversary, the Picts. Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender), a Roman corporal, is taken hostage by the Pict King, Gorlacon and the Ninth are charged with bringing him home and ending Pict domination of Britain. According to the Los Angeles Times, movie critics have given Miley Cyrus a less than favorable review in her new film The Last Song. However the LA Times also notes:

“Reviews generally don’t matter with this type of film. Because of Miley Cyrus’s audience, they will turn out to see her no matter what,” Hollywood box office critic, Paul Dergarabedian said.

ONE FOR BRITNEY SPEARS TRIBE WINSTONS: MATT KEARNEY’S BREATHE IN BREATHE OUT

This is a Britney Spears Post: Beautiful Music by Matt Kearney. In addition, Matt’s music video features Q’orianker Kilcher who’s the lead in the Princess Kaiulani indie film, screening now. Go see the film and go grab a beer or a vodka martini at Winston‘s in West Hollywood afterwards.

Incidentally, to throw in a bit of West Hollywood trivia, Wintons just happens to be Britney Spear‘s favorite haunt to chill from her infamous “express yourself” for disgruntle mothers and divorcees –pink wig days. That was October 16th 2007 and I can’t believe this Maori Kiwi lad has been in Hollywood that long, but I have. Although she had her star on the Hollywood Walk of fame, already, it was this transition from Kentucky girl into tabloid pop culture, where Britney became ensconced in Hollywood legend, like a pink Marilyn Monroe in those months.  :)

When Winstons had just opened, Brit Brit loaned it some of her star glow, and put it on the map. It became an institution of Hollywood hipsters from the get go. She’s a very giving person.

Spears trialed all of the Black Out album dance songs at this famous little young Hollywood haunt, with Winston’s DJ’s spinning her tracks. Yes, it’s a world famous local bar in West Hollywood.  Ha! Go see Q’ori’s film if you can. Thanks Hollywood.

I live one minute’s walk from Winston’s. Woot! And… Thanks Matt & Q’ori for being such great artists in America. You inspire. Love ya!

Pettyfer in character and make up, is not to be confused by Carey Hart‘s sense of humor with Hart’s latest leg tattoo tribute to his talented wife, Pink. :)
