THE HORIWOOD TOP TEN – 3.31.11

Charlotte Rampling is an actress that always brings an air of maturity to every film role she’s appeared in. Here’s Rampling’s mug today, for a different Hollywood view.

While fine filmmakers like James Cameron are offering technical tips to filmmakers here in the USA today recommending an increase from 25 FPS 24 FPS to 48 or 60 FPS to reduce strobing on digital film cameras while capturing the moving image for a better quality film product; down under in Kangaroo country, filmmakers are wrangling up their own private investors quite well to get their films made. It’s exciting stuff revealing pride of culture and traditions in celebrating a sense of place.

The stories have a local theme. A good thing, because it’s not a bad thing to hear the Aussie accent in cinema texts some times – not just at awards shows, right? This exciting buzz shows a renewed passion for Australia’s arts and culture in their local filmmaking community. The story can be read after our top ten today in Hollywood. James Cameron‘s filmmaking advice can be read here.

Here we go! :)

1. Moussa Koussa in London

2. Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez are friends

3. Kris Jenner talks creating your own economy

4. Olivia Wilde

5. Owl tattoos from Kat Von D

6. Australia’s trends

7. The judge who intervened in Wisconsin’s labor wrangles

8. Beatrice of York exits the club

9. US trends on bing.com

10. Rugby football humor – black or white? by Dan Carter

Private investors are jumping on board filmmakers visions to offer a view of culture that reflects the Aussie way of life. Films in the works are, Beneath Hill 60 (a military drama about WWI Aussie miners deployed to tunnel under the great Western front once). Townsville, a mining town with locals are funding the filmmakers vision.

As the story goes, Film producer Bill Leimbach, ‘raised $2.5 million in private investment for the $10 million film through mining industry suppliers, including a publican, the owner of a construction company, a truck operator, scaffolder, lawyer, excavator, road builder, property developer and a rock crusher.’

The private investors blend with government funding seems to be accelerating new ideas to be made into films. Out in May is Mad Bastards, a drama set in the Kimberley – once again funded by the areas mining community.

In August comes Red Dog, a heartfelt tale about a cattle dog that becomes a hero in the Pilbara, which has local investment from Rio Tinto, Woodside, WesTrac and regional airline SkyWest.

September sees a cultured adaptation of Patrick White’s novel The Eye of the Storm, that stars Oscar winner, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis and Charlotte Rampling. Producer Antony Waddington says private investors have contributed ”several million dollars” towards the $15 million budget. Rather than chasing a fast buck, they are fine-art lovers – discreet enough to want anonymity – who wanted to support a quality Patrick White project.

Although the investors who are investing in these Aussie films (do not necessarily expect to get their money back). “These stories need to be told” is the common bond that is causing the private sector of Australian film investors to believe in these stories being shown on the silver screen.

Bill Leimbach is upbeat to be progressing with two new film projects. One centers on the wool industry in a film titled Banjo and Matilda, a love triangle that centres on Banjo Paterson writing Waltzing Matilda (Australia’s national anthem) during a shearers’ strike lull.

Another film idea is from the Singaporean community for a $45 million co-production about the fall of Singapore. Two new films are also being made in Australia, the Willem Dafoe drama The Hunter and the Joel Edgerton-Teresa Palmer mystery drama Say Nothing. :)

JAMES CAMERON IS FUNNY TODAY – TALKS HIGHER FRAME RATES PER SECOND NEEDED FOR FILM INDUSTRY

Hollywood’s no.1 box office heavyweight, Mr James Cameron makes me smile today.

As guest commentary I’m going to run with The Hollywood Reporter’s full report on his appearance at CinemaCon 2011. As I never wrote this story, you might want to read it here at it’s original source, to be fair to this website’s hits rate.

As Hollywood’s reigning King of The Box Office in America, here’s what James had to say in a story penned with good humor too, by Carolyn Giardina: “Higher frame rates offer “the potential to improve showmanship,” the director tells attendees at ChinemaCon.

LAS VEGAS — Calling the current use of frame rates in digital cinema “inadequate,” James Cameron urged the industry to consider shooting and projecting movies at rates higher than the standard 24 frames-per-second in a demonstration he presented Thursday at Cinemacon.

Cameron contended that that higher frame rates offer the “potential to improve showmanship.”
To prove his point,  he showed a comparison of 3D content produced and projected at 24 frames-per-second, which is commonly used today, as well as at 48 and 60 frames-per-second (fps). He also showed clips that demonstrated other elements such as slow motion at these higher frame rates. Read the rest of this entry »

3D TWEETING IN VIRTUAL REALITY – JAMES CAMERON JOINS TWITTER, TWEETS KIM KARDASHIAN

Who else would James Cameron tweet on his first days as a twitter community member? A Kardashian of course.

Their conversation was 3D related.

Kim tweeted: “Welcome to our twit-world @JimCameron! I’m ready for my leading role in 3D! LOL.”

James’ response? “Kim, you’re already in 3D!”

News source: MTV. [If you saw Kim and sister Kourtney posing on CNN last night next to life sized cut outs of themselves on Piers Morgan's new show, you'd have to agree with Cameron. The Kardashians are already 3D sorta, here in the US].

JAMES CAMERON TALKS 2014, 2015 FOR AVATAR SEQUELS AT THE FLIX

Hollywood box office King, James Cameron is enjoying writing his Avatar novel sequels and getting them just right.

According to EW.com, Cameron says Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 (the film versions) will be released during the Christmas holidays in 2014 and 2015.

“I am in the process of writing the next two ‘Avatar’ films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. If you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form.”

He’s such a Hollywood tease, Lol! But at least James has finally gone on record as to when Avatar is getting a release date. Good stuff.

It’s a good thing we have Hobbits dropping in 3D to bridge that anticipation then, here in Hollywood.

AVATAR IS No.1 MOST ILLEGAL DOWNLOADED FILM 2010

James Cameron really does have the golden touch when it comes to making films people must have.

Avatar has scored top honors as the film illegally downloaded the most in 2010. TorrentFreak, reports ‘the environmentally-themed space romance was downloaded 16.6m times from torrent sites, which allow users to access films illegally by connecting to other users’ computers. That top figure is up 50% on last year’s leader, Star Trek, which was downloaded a mere 11m times.’

James Cameron must be stoked as well as spewing. 16.6 million times. Wowsa!

Sustainability in 3D is a hot topic.
