REMEMBERING CAPTAIN JAMES COOK VIA WIKIPEDIA

I notice that Wikileaks is being majorly considered for a Nobel Peace Prize Award, whereas encyclopedia (with oft skewed, not always factually correct information) Wikipedia, is not.

How can one person, Julian Assange be considered to win an award over all of the gazillion million trillion billion co-authors that Wikipedia claims contribute to their global knowledge bank? But yes, that is the case.

After at no.1, at no.2, Some other website at no.3 ( probably!), Wikipedia is the 4th most viewed website in The Western World. Wikileaks website never was that popular at influencing people. So, go figure.

Anyway, Wikipedia is awesome, as we know. You can even check up to see the first nonMaori New Zealander from the U.K who ever set foot on Aotearoa New Zealand soil. His name?

Captain James Cook: He is the prototype of white people of British persuasion in New Zealand, and he wasn’t all that bad. Here’s a bit on James, “Captain James Cook FRS RN (7 November 1728 – 14 February 1779) was a British explorer, navigator and cartographer, ultimately rising to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand.”

Like Lady Gaga, James kinda lived in a world where wearing wigs was kinda what they liked to do. As depicted by this photograph, also sourced via Wikipedia. It’s strange how Cook has Polynesian connection on the high seas, just like Maori people of New Zealand do, with Hawaii also. Kinda mirror image voyagers being shared today in New Zealand in contemporary modern and exciting Kiwi culture.

James couldn’t cook though. :)

Perhaps the Kiwi sense of humor is best reflected in the way that a wild breed of pig, is named the “Captain Cooker” in honor of James. Go figure! But that is too funny.
