REMEMBERING DENNY MILLER, KING OF THE JUNGLE IN HOLLYWOOD TARZAN CULTURE

He starred in The Party and he protected the wild life.

Most of you are perhaps too young to know who Denny Miller was. He once was a basketballer, who became the first blond Tarzan starring as the protective white guy in the TV series Tarzan, The Ape Man. His role in Hollywood protecting an Island paradise was well watched world wide.

Denny was renowned for his epic fight scenes and his courage to protect his Island dwelling friends and their environment. Not only Jane his heroine, but also the animals in their green kingdom.

I used to watch Denny Miller as a kid in black and white on my grandma’s TV in Helensville with my cousins on the front porch some holidays. He was the king of action in his day. He made white lads seem so brave cause he just leapt right into battles like it was second nature to him as a protector of Island life. He just had so much energy to burn when he fought.

He also played the character “Moose” once on the hit show of I Dream of Jeannie. – that TV series starring an astronaut and a girl who dressed like Kim Kardashian. Denny also appeared once on Hawaii Five-O.

Miller’s sense of humor is reflected in his books he wrote and published. One even won an award in 2006. Denny wrote an autobiography titled “Didn’t You Used To Be…What’s His Name?” and a book about the USA’s obesity problem as he was a Hollywood fitness buff of California, titled “Toxic Waist?…Get To Know Sweat!”. Love it. He was a character.

Here’s a pic of Denny as Tarzan. He was discovered on Sunset Blvd by an agent and signed to MGM. Today, he teaches relaxation.

JASON STRATHAM DOESN’T AMUSE SYDNEY AT THE MOVIES

One review notes Jason Stratham is ‘not action enough’ to amuse Sydney’s movie goers in The Mechanic.

Well, it is the land of Hugh Jackman so maybe they have a point.

Let’s hope Stratham gets it right for Aussie, next film then.

SPECIAL SPIRIT RISING FROM THE RUBBLE – RUSSELL CROWE FOR CHRISTCHURCH CITY

כִּֽי־יָ֭דַע דֶּ֣רֶךְ עִמָּדִ֑י בְּ֝חָנַ֗נִי כַּזָּהָ֥ב אֵצֵֽא׃

Otiia e mohio ana ia ki te ara e anga atu ai ahau: kia oti ahau te titiro iho e ia, ano he koura ahau i toku putanga mai.

But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come forth like gold.–Job, The Mystik – being refined under pressure.

Not to be outdone, by supermodel of the world, Rachel Hunter, Oscar winner Russell Crowe is sounding the trumpet too, for the special city of Christchurch.

the part Maori actor in this YouTube video message, ”At 12.51 on February the 22nd, Christchurch, a city that my family’s called home in the past, was ripped apart by a violent earthquake.”

“Christchurch continues to hurt,” Crowe’s message says.

Christchurch is a city that reflects us all in duress and crises. May this special spirit rise to achieve the full potential of purpose that it’s been gifted in the fire of adversities, tested greater than the purest gold or the strongest iron, to lead the world with new things.

In case you missed it, Rachel Hunter‘s message is a real pearla too. She glows… adding to this special spirit rising from the Garden City’s rubble that Russell rightly notes, fosters and ignites in this video.

This spirit is brave, noble, big-hearted, proven and above all resiliently strong and compassionate. Go Christchurch. Thanks Russ.

GAME OF THRONES ON HBO IS HORSEY, GLOOMY LIKE WINTER AND A BIT BEANEY TOO

I thought we’d had winter already on a global stage of culture–apparently, NO! Winter’s just beginning.

Because the word Hori means “George” in Te Reo Rangatira, The Language of Chiefs of Aotearoa New Zealand, I guess I should run guest commentary on George R.R Martin‘s book series hitting HBO where Oscar Winner Anna Paquin is this networks big, big star. Vampires… move over, horsemen and horsewomen are a coming to the USA via HBO. Wolves, stay though, along with humans in the trending topic of all world news – that being the theme of “power struggles.” Everyone involved in this new saga, looks a bit like Sir Peter Jackson‘s Oscars fan club. As I live here, and none of them do, really… I’m cool with that. Let’s wave these crazy kids Nordic flag today on Hollywood’s first and only Hollywood-based entertainment blog in The Entertainment (maybe soon to be Tsunami hit  jk :) Capitol of the World.

Joy Press writes via Hero Complex of the LA Times today, what we can expect from HBO’s hit drama, Game of Thrones:

“Gargantuan dire wolves, frozen tundras, corrupt royals, brutal deflowerings, gullets slit wide open — oh, and don’t forget the debauched dwarf. The chilling slogan “Winter Is Coming” only hints at the epic scope and brooding cinematic feel of the much-anticipated series “Game of Thrones,” which premieres April 17.

Based on George R.R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Fire” novels, the 10-episode saga is a high-stakes move for HBO — an expensive leap into spectacular fantasy for a network whose reputation was built on nuanced, character-driven dramas geared toward adults. The show’s stars merge actorly skill with genre-movie magnetism: Sean Bean is best known as Boromir inPeter Jackson’sLord of the Rings” trilogy, Lena Headey starred as Queen Gorgo in “300,” and indie movie veteran Peter Dinklage played Trumpkin in “Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.”

Writes Chicago Tribunes – Maureen Ryan: “The pilot for “Thrones” was shot in Northern Ireland and other European and North African locations in late 2009. Production will resume in June in Northern Ireland. It’s expected that the show will arrive on HBO in the spring of 2011, but no firm date has been set.”

Joy writes, “Thrones” has been in development since 2006. That’s when friends David Benioff and Dan Weiss decided they wanted to bring to life Martin’s magnum opus about bloody power struggles, dark mystical forces, and children grappling with the sins of their forefathers, all set in a gritty yet vaguely medieval fictional kingdom.

Benioff and Weiss have known each other for decades, and their meet-cute story is pretty unusual for hot Hollywood show runners: The Americans befriended each other while getting master’s degrees in Irish literature at Dublin’s Trinity College.

[Photo caption - Sean Bean and Julian Glover in "Game of Thrones" (Helen Sloan/HBO]

“Dan was studying Joyce, and I was studying Beckett,” Benioff says with a slight grin. The pair are sitting in a Pasadena hotel, both looking rakishly groomed, with 5 o’clock shadows in force midday.

Having studied two of 20th century modernism’s towering geniuses and later published literary fiction themselves (Benioff wrote several novels, including “The 25th Hour” and “City of Thieves,” while Weiss penned “Lucky Wander Boy”), it might seem strange that they were drawn to Tolkien-esque fantasy.

But for all their education and high-end novels, Weiss and Benioff quickly point out that they’re not just literary geeks: They are also Dungeons & Dragons geeks. “We were both dungeon masters,” says Weiss, whose novel “Lucky Wander Boy” is steeped in video game culture. In fact, the huge popularity of Martin-style fiction seems to go hand in hand with the immersive, drawn-out and escapist entertainment of video gaming.

It’s a full-on geek move that should stand them in excellent stead at Comic-Con International, though neither has learned Dothraki yet. Weiss quips, “It’s on my to-do list. I’ve been told Klingon was hard to learn, so we asked that it be easier to learn than Klingon.”

Maureen writes again, “HBO’s description of the series: “Based on the series of books by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is an epic struggle for power set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom.”

ROCKING FITNESS, THE McCONAUGHEY MALIBU WAY

From the pages of Men’s Fitness (the magazine that guys read before yoga class and after the gym here in the hood) Malibu based actor Matthew McConaughey shares his fitness tips that can help men ‘lose their gut forever.’

Shares McConaughey, “It’s not as simple as it seems, [lifting rocks as weights in your workout]” he says. “You shift the weight from high above your head, in your right arm, then your left, then rest it on your shoulders, adding more weight to your back, then your legs. You get a full-body workout just by finding out how many positions you can manage without having to set the weight on the ground. You also discover the stronger and weaker spots in your physique…I’m not a professional athlete,” he says. “But I have a job where I like to look good and be as healthy as possible.”

Whoever would have thought that the humble rock, outside of a gym, could be used for movie stars staying in shape. Gosh that was unexpected news. I guess Matthew’s point is just exercise then.

Not bad advice at all. You do realize that we’re all supposed to live forever in California right? :)

FROM DESERT STORM AND BODYGUARDING FOR THE BUSH FAMILY, STEVE McMICHAEL IS TRAINING HOBBITS HOW TO FIGHT

Thank goodness for the Calgary Herald to help a Maori Kiwi keep abreast of Hobbit News in Oscars weekend. Mr Eric Volmers of the Calgary Herald brings us some exciting Hobbit development news this weekend in Hollywood. Let’s run it as guest commentary for filmmaking news in one of the most exciting film franchises Hollywood has ever known.

He’s stood guard for George Bush Sr., fought in Desert Storm and had his neck broken by Fantastic Four villain Dr. Doom.

And now, Cochrane-based stuntman, film producer and martial arts expert Steve McMichael is teaching hobbits how to fight somewhere in the wilds of New Zealand.

At least that’s what we think he’s doing. As with many high-profile, megabudgeted films, there is a shroud of secrecy over Sir Peter Jackson‘s, twofilm adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s 1937 book, The Hobbit.

“Amongst all the media chatter about the British actor playing Superman, one person has remained mum, and that’s the man himself, Henry Cavill. Well, the Tudors star has broken his silence in a big way: he’s featured on the cover of this week’sEntertainment Weekly, donning a leather jacket over a battered Superman T-shirt. Inside, he opens up about his audition for the role, in which he had to wear the Man of Steel’s spandex suit and shoot a screen test in front of director Zack Snyder (300).

According to EW, “Cavill was feeling less than super in the moment, at least about his ability to fill out the costume: He had just finished shooting a film with Bruce Williscalled The Cold Light of Day, and the part required to him to shed the impressive abs of steel and muscle tone he had put on for the movie he made right before that, the forthcoming mythic fantasy Immortals.

When Cavill was in the suit, “Snyder saw something — or rather someone — different. ‘He walked out, and no one laughed,’ says the director. ‘Other actors put that suit on, and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go “Wow. Okay: This was Superman.”‘”–BBC News.

X-MEN FIRST CLASS TRAILER, GERMAN BULL DYKES, THEIR IPHONES AND PASSION FOR ECHINACEA POTTLES – 2.10.11 @ 6.45PM

Three German bull dykes speak German in Hollywood while playing on their iPhones and swapping Echinacea pottles to read from the health store. Not that it matters as it is totally a closed conversation, but why don’t I speaka da Deutsch? Lol!

If I could speak German, I’d probably throw in some Ray Allen 3 point record talk as a conversation opener. I’d follow it up with some banter about Cisco. Peggy Rea and Axel Weber. I would definitely say the words ‘Born This Way’ to get their attention, with perhaps some work out hot tips terminology as read via Hugh Jackman’s build up press for X Men First Class. (Watch trailer at link). Hugh’s a big hit with dykes, oddly. Go figure! Then in my best Donald Trump I would mention the “s card.”

I decide an echinacea conversation is all a bit contrived and I’m feeling lazy today, so I choose not to interrupt this power health, dyke moment. Gosh. These girls are all set in echinacea euphoria land. Still, these girls make me ask, Why don’t I speaka da Deutsch?

Ten posts you’re digging right now in Hollywood, as noticed at 6.45pm are:

1. A Helensville rugby umbrella with Rihanna‘s biggest pop hit

2. The power politics of billionaire leaders equals a global revolution

3. Chelsea Handler and the 3rd World

4. Social media, Hollywood news and you – 1.15.11

5. Katy Perry talks tofu-urky

6. Industry town news – 2.10.11

7. Facebook confessions of a “Like You Need It?” Burger King girl

8. Born This Way – Hollywood Walk of Fame – Star Post

9. Elaine & Ken Langone lose their Hosni Mubarak look asap!

10. America is becoming more bilingual – Census Results 2010

In Other News - Grey Lyn, Auckland City, Samoan raised action star Dwayne Johnson gets majorly segued into Hugh Jackman’s Hollywood mix, with an exclusive Fox news story (now not so exclusive) that goes like this:

It’s that time again, folks: Hugh Jackman is pumping iron and packing on the pounds to shape up for the next installment of Wolverine.

But who has he enlisted for help in achieving that rock-solid physique? Why, none other than The Rock.

“I got the diet from Dwayne Johnson, he put on 25 pounds for his last film and I saw him and was like, ‘wow’ so I called him up and he gave me his exact diet,” Jackman told FOX411′s Pop Tarts at the Audi Super Bowl celebration at the Audi Forum in Dallas on Friday evening. “I need to put on about 30-40 pounds, I don’t know if I can get there but I am up about 15 pounds so far. I’m trying.”

Jackman’s Johnson-inspired weight gain diet is comprised of 6,000 calories daily, and believe it or not, but its “hard work” to eat so much.

“Basically it’s steak or chicken, broccoli and cauliflower, and sometimes rice but only up until lunch time,” he explained. “That’s it eight times per day. It’s like a job in itself.”

Jackman, who hosted the Academy Awards in 2008, also shared some words of wisdom for this year’s hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

“Have fun, enjoy the first hour because it’s the best audience you’ll ever have and from then on there is a lot of seat fillers and people that are really tired and probably upset they didn’t win,” he said. “So just keep the show moving.”

And even though the Australian native grew up playing his homeland’s beloved form of football – rugby — he’s happily converted to U.S style.

“It took me a little while to get into, because I was used to rugby and played rugby,” Jackman confessed. “But I love that in every game there is great pressure and suspense. With rugby and Aussie Rules (another form of Australian football) it is just flowing all the time, but American Football is so full of suspense. I just love it. And the athletiscm, these guys are freaks. I love it.”"

The world is changing so rapidly, that the US has its very own rugby football team. If you want to support them at Rugby World Cup in September this year. Get your hot tix, right here. You won’t want to miss it.

But why don’t I speaka da Deutsch? :)

REBUILDING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES FUSED-TEENS, TAYLOR LAUTNER IS THE 9TH POWER EARNER OF HOLLYWOOD 2011

Sometimes, if we ‘think indigenous peoples’ more often than we do… we all win.

Teenager Taylor Lautner is living proof of a Native American Indian teen doing well. At 18, Lautner is the no.9th highest earning box office movie figure in Hollywood for 2011.

All the encouragement we need to give Indigenous young people every chance in the world to succeed. Think action, encouragement and for indigenous peoples teens then – is a good message we can take from this young man’s journey in Hollywood and the world as an action movie star.

YES! I REALLY AM A FACEBOOK FRIEND OF ALISON STEWART

Alison Stewart is one of the most compassionate people I know of in the world. Her legacy of work with time devoted to teenagers and the poor and needy of New Zealand is the stuff that Rosa Parks Hollywood film legends are made of.

Maori young people in particular are Alison Stewart’s forte.

Not that Alison has ever distinguished between a Maori teen or nonMaori teen either. She just loves young people.

It is an honor to be Alison’s Facebook friend. Most of all, to have been a teen growing up and seeing Alison train up a group of women to impact community with good actions, is far more impacting to my life and any bro who saw Alison do her thing, and to all who even remotely know Alison… than being her Facebook friend.

Love puts a face on it, with actions people can see in community. Alison Stewart was that person for many of us growing up as teens. Her home in Tikipunga was legendary for all Ali taught others. Kia Ora Alison Stewart from Hollywood. Thank you for all you taught us growing up in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Even though Ali has never been in a Hollywood movie, I have to put Ali in the action stars line up, on this blog, because Ali’s life is one of action and always has been. Much love from the City of Angels Ali!

HENRY CAVILL LANDS THE LEAD IN SUPERMAN

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”–director Zack Snyder describing Henry Cavill (The Tudors) casting as Superman in the well known film franchise reboot.

Reports Film Jabber, “Henry Cavill will play Clark Kent and Superman in the upcoming Superman reboot, to be directed by Zack Snyder and written by David Goyer and Christopher Nolan. Henry Cavill will be seen in the gritty, mythical action movie Immortals, in theaters this Novemeber. Superman is to be released in 2012, presumably in December.”

Congrats. It has to be said that the trend to cast UK actors in leading light Hollywood hero roles in unstoppable right now. A little nod to Prince William‘s rising presence in the world perhaps.

HORI POTTER HOBBIT HUMOR, MAD MEN BERRY MARTINIS AND CULTURE BEING SHARED FROM HOLLYWOOD, 11.28.11 @ 8.45am

“At the coral reef, the beach tide was low like the flat Injun prairie plains of Boise, Idaho.”–Horiwood, a novel.

“You don’t have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things – to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated. It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”–Sir Edmund Hilary‘s humility as wisdom in Hollywood.

What’s up with this picture? It’s like when the cast of Mad Men went for berry martinis at The Abbey with the Hollywood Maori Harry Potter blogger guy, on the way to the Arclight theater to see a film with hobbits in it in 3D. That’s too many alluvial-intellectual levels of a horticulturalists nation’s, pop cultural quircke.

Anyways, in more simpler news. Ten Hollywood entertainment news posts, you’re sharing as culture right here on Horiwood.Com via social media are:

1. Kiwi Humor – A vintage Hollywood movie postcard for Sir Peter Jackson

2. The physics of super heroes - when good scientists become movie geek experts too

3. Benjamin Franklin & Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki quotes

4. Sir Ian McKellan will reprise the grey power fierce, for The Hobbit in 3D

5. Wisdom from the book In The Presence of a Gorilla

6. Yale Women’s Rugby Team & Rugby World Cup excursions 2011

7. Nesian Mystik music

8. Harry Potter‘s Daniel Radcliffe for Trevor Project teenagers

9. Maori Hollywood actors, the Courage to Love Novel, catching up with 3D star Cliff Curtis

10. Nicole Kidman joins Jon Hamm for presenting duties at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2011

MAORI AS SUPER HEROES OF TAIAHA ART APPEARS IN HOLLYWOOD AND MILTON’S KOWHAIWHAI PRINT TEE SHIRT

Maori-Kiwi Super Heroes of the World Post: If you live near Melrose fashion district of West Hollywood, the culture is street smart fashionista meets your favorite super hero comic book. The vibe is, one’s neighborhood as living eclectic super heroes. I kid you not. It may sound a little far fetched, but it’s a good concept in Melrose. Too see your neighbor as a current or future hero of the world, is where community begins. Against a backdrop of super hero art, this is the subliminal message when you meet real people – as art too.

The ‘super hero’ theme also sells Hollywood and West Hollywood too all year round in a nation that is much loved for super heroes being brought alive for global audiences via Hollywood cinema.

Hollywood super heroes are American, but they are also universally loved. When heroes of another culture hit Hollywood’s psyche, without even a marketing budget to achieve that, these types of heroes are pretty special. Perhaps they even have an authentic sense of culture that just arrives anyway without all of the hype.

Today, I noticed that as hot as Spider-Man culture (and varying versions of it) in Hollywood right now – was the appearance of a Maori taiaha in a super hero warrior’s hand as painted by an Asian-American brother with a hat. Well worth sharing today as local pop cultural art that is trending on trendy Melrose.

Ten minutes after photographing this pic, I also noticed Milton‘s (a graphic artist and musician, composer) tee shirt with kowhaiwahi elements in screen printed design form. Milton tells me he scored ‘his favorite tee shirt’ under the Obey fashion label. Well worth sharing too, I reckon as another example of Maori-Kiwi culture winging it’s way into US trends.

It’s good to know Maori culture of Aotearoa New Zealand is keeping Hollywood and America amused in visual ways.

When I look at these images, I see tino rangatiratanga in effect. That concept being “sovereignty of one’s sense of unique humanity. It means speaking the tongue of your people’s origins without fear of suppression. It means forming, thinking, expressing your own unique thoughts in the culture you were given. It means liberty. It means freedom to be whole and holistic too, link to the earth as well as family, extended family (whanau) and one’s community – the strength of a people united as one.” I see these images and know ‘that tino rangatiratanga as an arts aesthetic of Maori-Kiwi culture is buzzing all over the world.

It is the stuff super people in groovy communities are made of. Naturally. Maori-Kiwi culture can be seen, even in the City of Angels quite a lot actually. It warms my heart and is very inspiring! I now am expecting to see more of it and you just never know whose going to be wearing Maori culture next!

Perhaps this is testament to the fine acting Maori actors like Cliff Curtis, Oscar nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes and the cast of the Whalerider family entertainment movie, have already gifted Hollywood to date with their love and skill of wielding a taiaha as action star actors.

[Thanks Milton. Maori super hero with taiaha appears on Genesse & Melrose]

CAPTAIN AMERICA’S CHRIS EVANS FURTHERS THE SUPER HERO NARRATIVE

“If it looks strikingly different than the classic Captain America get-up — bold colors, flimsy material, a mask with weird little wings — that’s definitely by design. ‘You can’t really take him seriously in his flag pajamas,’ director Joe Johnston told EW in last year’s exclusive first look cover story on the film. So instead, the hero’s main uniform was designed to resemble a tricked-out airman’s jumpsuit, the ‘A’ on the helmet and star on the chest modest in size, the colors muted. It took Evans about 25 minutes to suit up. ‘He likes to do it all by himself,’ explained costume designer Anna Sheppard. ‘I think it helps him feel like a super hero.’”–Enetertainment Weekly.

Dress ups and America go hand in hand when creating super hero narratives. Chris is doing okay at it so far.
