INDUSTRY TOWN NEWS, HOLLYWOOD – 1.6.11

March 30, 2011 will see a docu-reality TV series about coal miners, called Coal go to air. Miners are hot – but, in a world of recycling and electric cars, coal is not. The series showcases (yet agin) the true-blue American hero. Spike TV will feature it, by producer Thom Beers, about the lives of Appalachian coal miners.  Spike speculates “older and broader” male audiences will watch the show, rather than Spike’s target demographic of 18-34. Will you watch it?

Sociopolitical ideas set in the future will star in Elysium, a film by Neil Blomkap & District 9‘s Sharlto Copley.

Robert Deniro will lead Cannes 9 member jury in May 2011.

ESPN will broadcast the 1 hour documentary, Tim Tebow: Everything in Between, tonight at 7pm. The doco directed by Chase Heavener tracks Tebow’s rise from college quarterback to the Pros. Hot sporting TV.

Pulp is the new J.J Abrams TV series being pitched with Fringe‘s producers Monica Breen and Alison Schapker at the helm.

Ridley Scott & Kevin Macdonald‘s film project Life in a Day will feature at Sundance and premiere on YouTube. The film is like movie-making Facebook. Meaning it relies on the 4,500 hours of footage made by other people, with MacDonald doing the edit. Hot. Everyone of the 26 people (Egypt to the Ukraine) whose footage was used gets a co-director credit. How cool! January 28th at 7pm is when Life will broadcast. It is subtitled in 25 languages. Is this the future of democratic filmmaking?
