WHETU FALA, OUR LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE – BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE @ ORAKEI

She’s an actress (actor), writer, director-producer and it has to be said, that whenever you see Whetu Fala, that she reminds you of sunshine.

Whetu was filmming footage today (of course!) at Orakei, Auckland City. Watching Whetu frame politicians, a Mayor, Maori Chiefs and their whanau (family) today all in one moving picture at Ngati Whatua o Orakei’s Deed of Settlement signing day, was like watching early Jackson 5 music clips. Simply because, her smile behind the camera just beamed.

If you’re reading this from Hollywood, you can check out Whetu’s IMDB profile here. Whetu survived the Christchurch earthquakes and now lives on the tropical artsy paradise Isle climes, of Waiheke Island.

Very Hell Boy. Watch at the 2.30 mark.

Too funny.

ASHTON KUTCHER – SILICON VALLEY START UP INVESTOR EXTRAORDINAIRE

Good looks don’t always last forever. Perhaps that’s why Ashton Kutcher, who some have dumbed Hollywood (or Iowa’s) most savviest actor has been masterful at investing in start up internet companies.

When I arrived in Hollywood, almost six years ago, Ashton was into restaurants buying with his That’s 70′s Show castmates own 50% shares in some of Young Hollywood’s favorite eateries. Then Kutcher met Demi Moore and his intelligence levels, suddenly began to meet the benefits of opportunity.

Here’s Paul Harris reporting on Kutcher’s rise to fame as a Silicon Valley start up investor, hidden well behind the face of Two and a half Men‘s prime TV coverage in the USA. He’s a good front man, that’s for sure.

News source: . First published: The Guardian. Photo via The Hollywood Gossip.

Life often imitates art, but perhaps never as strangely as in the current case of Ashton Kutcher, the puppyish actor best known for playing dumb but good-looking characters in US sitcoms and Hollywood movies. Tomorrow night Kutcher, 33, who is married to A-list actress Demi Moore, will replace Charlie Sheen’s old role on the hit TV show Two and a Half Men. Kutcher will play an internet billionaire – a role tailor-made for an actor who is, in fact, one of the savviest and best known investors in California’s supercharged Silicon Valley.

Kutcher has carved out a reputation as a master of the highly complex and ultra-competitive start-up scene whose celebrity touch – and millions of dollars in potential investment funds – can turn a company from idea to reality, send share prices soaring and net a huge financial reward at the same time. KEISHA CASTLE-HUGHES TREADS THEATER’S BOARDS IN END OF THE GOLDEN WEATHER, A PLAY

Alright, here in Aotearoa New Zealand, the nation’s sweetheart of the silver screen is Keisha Castle-Hughes - a working mom and past Oscars nominee.

What’s Keisha up to? Like Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame, Keisha is currently treading Theater’s boards in a play, End of The Golden Weather. According to, an NZ.Govt website:

Young Geoff is a daydreamer with a burning ambition to be a famous writer. Through his eyes we see the wonder of life on a perfect beach, in a perfect 1930s New Zealand, during a perfect summer. It’s a world of magic and transformation, where anything can happen and miracles seem possible.

Firpo is a social outcast who dreams of winning an Olympic medal. When Geoff sets out to help Firpo make his dream a reality, ignoring his father’s rebukes and community ridicule, a battle rages between the eternal optimism of the child and the harsh pragmatism of adulthood.

Gliding effortlessly between flights of poetic fancy and blunt everyday speech, The End of the Golden Weather is iconic New Zealand storytelling at its very best, a poignant theatrical gem that everyone can relate to.”

I just might go to this. To see a Hollywood-Maori living legend perform live doesn’t get much better in theater than that in NZ, that’s for sure. Go Auckland Theatre Company! :)

Keisha stars with actor Nic Samson - from the comedy band Guns N Moses.

JASON MAMOA STARS AS CONAN THE BARBARIAN – MOVIE WATCH 8.19.11

It’s Los Angeles Thursday, or, New Zealand friday (we ahead of the US). My body clock is wired to ask, what’s on at the movies this weekend?

Here’s Company Town with the scoop: “Conan the Barbarian,” a reworking of the 1982 film that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, is hoping to vanquish the competition at the box office this weekend. But even the sword-wielding brute may not have enough strength to conquer “The Help.”

Ever since its release more than a week ago, the adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel about civil rights in 1960s Mississippi has been exceeding industry expectations at the box office. Audiences who saw the film last week gave it a perfect grade of A+, according to market research firm CinemaScore, and that positive word of mouth was reflected in the picture’s midweek grosses.

Since Monday, “Help” has collected about $12 million, bringing its total to $47.8 million — an indication that the film will see only a modest decline in ticket sales this weekend. Disney, which is distributing the movie, is hoping it will collect at least an additional $18 million.

But the new 3-D “Conan” film, which stars big-screen [sorta] newcomer, native Hawaiian actor, Jason Namakaeha Momoa, still has a shot at claiming the weekend’s No. 1 spot. According to those who have seen pre-release audience surveys, the movie will probably gross $15 million to $18 million. That should be enough to beat out the weekend’s other three new films in wide release.

The fourth film in the “Spy Kids” franchise — being released in both 3-D and so-called 4-D, aka Aroma-Scope Read the rest of this entry »

JASON BATEMAN AND RYAN REYNOLDS PROMO TWO NEW MOVIES EACH

Funnyman Jason Bateman is on the promotional trail, flogging two new movies. According to Cover Awards website, via Entertainment Weekly, Bateman stars in the ucpoming, Horrible Bosses and The Change-Up.

The latter film stars Green Lantern action star, Ryan Reynolds in a movie, where the two lads swap bodies.

Sounds like a student exchange program for kiddults, really.

Here in New Zealand, I am enjoying work with a brand new boss, btw. Fun so far. :)

Meanwhile Ryan Reynolds depicts the Hollywood art of attracting the Chinese audience base, at the movies, for the USA when he tells Details Magazine, that he has a dark side. Says Ryan “You want to see what I’m like when we turn the tape recorder off? I slit throats, that’s what I do. I only drink panda tears. Do not bring me water. Do not bring me filtered water. I want the tears of a newborn panda, and I will have them—because I’m Ryan Reynolds!”

On his now infamous split from Scarjo, Renold says, “I’ll say this: the media was not invited to my marriage, and they’re definitely not invited into the divorce.”

Fair enough too! Arnold Schwarzengger needs that kind of splitsville press to revive his movie career, at some point in Hollywood. Ryan gives Arnie all the scope in the world to make a movie comeback then.

Kutcher will play a new character (obviously), while working with Charlies remaining castmates. Sheen will concentrate on his $100 million law suit with Warner Bros (a big Hollywood news story, all on its own).

ROBERT PATTINSON ON LIFE AFTER VAMPIRES AND AN ELEPHANT MOVIE

In hindsight, if we look back on the years that Robert Thomas Pattinson became a big star of the Twilight Saga and Hollywood, we have to admit they were years of financial vampiring in the age of a global economic crises. They were also years of the oil and energy vampiring phenomena, in the fossil fuels resources markets.

Pattinson in a sense, was a guinea pig fore-runner for the reimergence of Prince William‘s UK cross-over appeal into the US and worldwide markets. Many global figures send their guinea pigs out first to test the ground, it’s just part of the art of growing celebrities like a finely tuned science these days.

Pattinson, as the world’s most famous twilight vampire of his generation has a proven star template, that U.K stars can be proud of. Growing a blog within Hollywood had it’s many daily challenges when I lived in the US. However, Pattinson was a sure fire winner to always grow a blog. Any story or quote from this lad, would often take the no.1 spot in daily blog ratings interests. He’s a bonafide superstar.

In this article via HGE, to the Star Times’ Cindy Pearlman during an interview at Santa Monica, Pattinson shares his thoughts of hanging up his vampire contacts and heading into more diverse Hollywood movie roles as an actor, whose growing in his art and acting roles.

On observing fame and his peers balancing act to stay sane: “I think the people who lose their minds are the ones who’ve been fighting to attain fame for years and years. If and when they suddenly achieve it, they’re like, ‘yeah, I deserve everything I’ve got.’ For me I literally took a step in one direction, not knowing what I was doing at all. It just happened. So I can’t really claim anything.”

On humility in choosing movie roles: “Becoming ‘in demand’ quickly affords you the opportunities to work with people who are far more experienced than you. I think you need to take those opportunities and not always try to shoulder the entire burden of a movie. In order to do that, you need to be mindful not to let your ego get ahead of you.”

On completing his role in the Twilight Saga: “I’ll be very glad not to put those contacts in anymore or have to put on the sparkling makeup, but I will really miss the character. I do love the guy. I feel like I know him pretty well know.”

Upcoming Work: Pattinson stars in Water for Elephants currently screening. He is currently on a hiatus and then will embark on new film project Cosmopolis in the adaptation of Don DeLillo‘s book. His character is a millionaire of Manhatten.

As a move on Hollywood’s chess board, Cosmopolis gives Pattinson a good vehicle to comment on Wall Street Culture’s influence in our times.

Michele Manelis also interviewed Pattinson obtaining these quotes. Her reporting can be viewed here.

INSIDE A PRESIDENT’S MIND – RONALD REAGAN’S RHETORIC OF SOLDIERS GOING TO WAR

“For everything, there is a season. A time for war and a time for peace.”–King Solomon.

The last week I’ve been wondering how Presidents and Prime Minister types can sleep at night, when sending troops off to war. I’ve been hot and cold on the topic weighing the balances of why we go to war, as a caring citizen. Unless you’re totally three sheets to the wind, how could leaders cast in such a position not think about their soldiers who are at war–and not be vexed in soul?

I’m not judging because in Hollywood, our souls are charcoled barbecued black. Black! I repeat, so black! I kid you not! Big city living can be brutally good! Evil at times in a concrete jungle. It takes its toll! You know, all those movie stars everywhere too! Blimey. Life can be brutal. :)

Thankfully in Beverly Hills there’s an exhibition on that covers this topic for Presidents and leaders who are embarking on the brink of an increased war effort.

The exhibition notes how once President of the USA Ronald Reagan crossed this bridge. He sought the help of Pastors and Rabbis to speak on the matter. What was discovered was that the word ‘kill’ is used in the bible. As in ‘thou shalt not kill.’ Yet in the original translation of the Torah of the old testament in Hebrew, the wording states “We should not murder.” Apparently “killing” not “murdering,” as what happens at war, was a revelation that provided some peace of mind to Ronald Reagan, a man who acted in Hollywood films and who rose to be cast in a nation’s greatest role. Here’s the visual evidence. Sorry, I forgot to turn the flash off when taking these. Like… doh!

I value life. I love Peace, yet this man’s discoveries in his Presidency (as presented in this exhibition) provide solace today (if any can be found in war’s losses) on this matter. They are perhaps worthy of being shared from an important American Heritage Arts and Culture exhibition of US Presidents challenges they were faced with at pivotal times in history.

It’s kind of an interesting concept to acknowledge that leaders are living cultural treasures. They make difficult decisions based on varying levels of information, to do their best with wisdom to direct and serve with their gifts of courage. Power corrupts, but the leader that values their peoples lives as much as their own, always wins any battle. God is with them in the battle.

If any soldiers or military are reading this, not to worry. I swear you won’t have a darker heart than me. You’re all good. Some days, in between my Starbucks lattes, I honestly think it’s a miracle, I haven’t been struck down by lightning and that I am still able to blog from Hollywood. Indeed, God has turned a blind eye on many occasion with great mercy. Humor too, I hope.

Kia kaha. Stay Strong. Work as a team. Always pray in battle. Make each other laugh as this is strength. And… Peace! :)

REMEMBERING DENNY MILLER, KING OF THE JUNGLE IN HOLLYWOOD TARZAN CULTURE

He starred in The Party and he protected the wild life.

Most of you are perhaps too young to know who Denny Miller was. He once was a basketballer, who became the first blond Tarzan starring as the protective white guy in the TV series Tarzan, The Ape Man. His role in Hollywood protecting an Island paradise was well watched world wide.

Denny was renowned for his epic fight scenes and his courage to protect his Island dwelling friends and their environment. Not only Jane his heroine, but also the animals in their green kingdom.

I used to watch Denny Miller as a kid in black and white on my grandma’s TV in Helensville with my cousins on the front porch some holidays. He was the king of action in his day. He made white lads seem so brave cause he just leapt right into battles like it was second nature to him as a protector of Island life. He just had so much energy to burn when he fought.

He also played the character “Moose” once on the hit show of I Dream of Jeannie. – that TV series starring an astronaut and a girl who dressed like Kim Kardashian. Denny also appeared once on Hawaii Five-O.

Miller’s sense of humor is reflected in his books he wrote and published. One even won an award in 2006. Denny wrote an autobiography titled “Didn’t You Used To Be…What’s His Name?” and a book about the USA’s obesity problem as he was a Hollywood fitness buff of California, titled “Toxic Waist?…Get To Know Sweat!”. Love it. He was a character.

Here’s a pic of Denny as Tarzan. He was discovered on Sunset Blvd by an agent and signed to MGM. Today, he teaches relaxation.

ACTOR ADRIANNE PALICKI STARTS HER NEW JOB

She’s about leaping over cars, wearing horses tails in her hair, carrying a lasso, kicking men’s behinds without wearing glasses. And she’s not in Australia.

Adrianne Palicki starts her new job… in America. Now that latter fact alone, makes this girl a wonder of a woman.

Palicki was raised in Ohio. She has a tattoo of her folks Jeff & Nancy on her arm. Basketball and running track are her sports. When she moved to L.A surprisingly she didn’t work at Starbucks or Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Bank of America, or Subway. She worked at Togos. Smart.

Best quote of Palicki’s to date across her career was she she once worked with John Woo.

She says “It’s just amazing to see John Woo kick alien ass! It’s not something you get to see very often.”

An alien is someone who walks on soil they don’t own.

This looks like a good show for young girls. Let’s support it.

CHARLIE SHEENS RADIO CITY HALL TOUR DATES SELL OUT

Charlie Sheen maybe everyone’s favorite crazy TV Uncle in Hollywood, having public melt downs across all social media platforms, yet Radio City Hall of New York are forking out to see Charlie live in concert on his live nation tour.

Sheen stands to pocket $7 million from The Tour. Or, he gets 85% of all door takings to his gigs. That’s better than spending 14 hours on set 3 days a week, maybe. Why does this man resonate with the underdog so strongly? He’s like a rock star for Live Nation.

More at TMZ. In addition Seattle.PI report: ‘Sheen will be in the Comcast Arena in Everett at 8 p.m. on May 3 to continue his reign as the warlock of morbid fascination. The show is said to be for “mature audiences,” and no one under 18 years old will be admitted. Time to lock up your… well, lock up everyone. Just to be safe.’

The UK Daily Mail focuses their Sheen news on a recent poll conducted by Public Policy Polling. The poll reveals that ‘the fallen star (Sheen, I take it) was placed in hypothetical election match ups with the former Alaska governor (Sarah Palin) and Barack Obama. When given the choice between Palin and Sheen, Democratic voters chose the actor over the 47-year-old Palin, by a 44-24 majority.”

Ridiculous! :)

JEMAINE CLEMENT – LIKE WATER FOR HOT CHOCOLATE ELEPHANTS

Reports Zimbio today: ‘Frustrated with attention from fans and photographers, “Flight of the Conchords” star Jemaine Clement, splashes those surrounding him with water from a bottle he was carrying. Moments later an upset fan seeks revenge and douses Clement with hot chocolate, soaking the actor/musician’s coat.’

Jemaine looks like a cross between Sir Peter Jackson and beat poet Allen Ginsberg on his way to a guitar jam session in The Big Apple. Poor funny guy. Hope this Kiwi hairy hobbit is all good in the US of A.

In Los Angeles, Jemaine has a huge following of quirky humored appreciating people. He’s a big star here in the 50 and under set. I always feel like such a loser when I repeatedly get asked if Jemaine Clement is a Facebook friend, and have to say, um “nah.” :)

Kia ora bro!

VINTAGE BILLY T JAMES AND DON SELWYN ON AIRLINE CUSTOMS

Two Maori greats, comedian, Billy T James and producer/ director Don Selwyn once had the daunting task of educating their country folk on correct customs etiquette. Here’s their blast from the past as a reminder of how far we’ve all come in such a short space of time on the cultural customs front.

Both gave a lot to their beloved nation, to get it up to speed on the culturally more relaxed and real fronts. Using comedy as their tool, they once combatted archaic values, masking as superior culture. This is how they did it. They were the culture doctors. My cuzzies and I grew up watching these lads. This is how we do it. Enjoy.
