WENDI MURDOCH – POWER FILM PRODUCER AND SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN

13 May

Buying books and spinning them into film is all the rage. In fact, good authors are fast becoming the center of Hollywood. Authors + 3D action filmmakers. More importantly, Asian storylines are a perfect fit for 3D films special effects ability to visually portray their high action content. Kung fu in 3D will be unbeatable in the future of cinema.

Although this is not a post about a Chinese 3D action-film–it has to be said that Wendi Murdoch as a film producer is well on her way, to wowing the box office with good Asian stories, that potentially will be told in 3D.

Fox Searchlight have been successful at charming IDG China Media for the US rights to Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, an adaptation set in 19th Century China of the Lisa See novel. The film version is directed by Wayne Wang. Gianna Jun and Li Bing Bing star in the Ron Bass adapted script with help from Angela Workman and Michael Ray.

The film has a couple of power producers on board, to give it the wings it deserves. Namely, Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan — wives of News Corp (Fox) head Rupert Murdoch and MGM chair Harry Sloan.

Wendi has also underwrittern exec-producer Hugo Shong‘s China-based film project also.

Thank goodness for Wendi, otherwise here in the West–we’d more often than not, miss out on the beauty of good Asian storytelling for the screen, that exists out of stereotyping of Asian characters. So with that in mind… Go girl!

And in case, here in Hollywood, we don’t really know who Wendi is, or get her significance to realigning Hollywood to be more Chinese market fit and savvy, here’s Boh Runga‘s Star song (the Stellarshine Mix version), just to announce Wendi’s arrival on the Hollywood producing scene. :)
