BIRD IN A HOLLYWOOD TREE – PART III

As I write from Hollywood in this moment in time, a plane flies overhead.

I am reminded of a song in the Maori language of the Tuwharetoa and Ngati Maniapoto Maori tribes of Aotearoa New Zealand. It’s about a bird singing. Here’s the lyrics in Te Reo Rangatira, the language of Chiefs.

Ko te putake o tenei karanga kia koe E tuku aroha kia koe e taku whaiaipo e Kia ora nei koe kiki pio kiki pio pio pio pio Ano ra ko te kete tui.

You said you wouldn’t take the blame if I said goodbye. When I told you all my reasons then you started to cry

Chorus: I’d like to be like a bird whistling in the tree. All I’d like to be is like a bird singing in the trees.

You said you would always love me and would always be true.

Though you tried to make it happen I didn’t know what to do.

There’s a dark and empty space which lies so deep inside.

Presses down upon my spirit and I started to cry.

____

Thanks Tuwharetoa and Ngati Maniapoto for the shared culture and strength. “Kia Kaha. Stay Strong.” Kia mau koe ki to mana whenua, mana moana, mana tangata, Mana Wairua a Te Atua o Nga Taangata tika tonu a Aotearoa me ona hoa tika, mo ake tonu.

For the children and great grandchildren of these tribes in the central North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, I wept today.

THE HORIWOOD TOP TEN – WED 3.23.1

Today was a sad day in Hollywood. My late grandmother Elizabeth Cruickshank‘s (Lil’s) favorite Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Taylor, passed away aged 79. She died of congestive heart failure. The full statement of this fine ambassador of humanitarian arts and culture was read by her son Michael Wilding Jr. It reads as follows via US Magazine:

The two-time Oscar winner and humanitarian “was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

What a nice way to remember one’s mother. Elizabeth Taylor was a Hollywood Queen. In Hollywood entertainment news you voted today, here’s our top ten on Horiwood.Com. Thanks people.

SPECIAL SPIRIT RISING FROM THE RUBBLE – RUSSELL CROWE FOR CHRISTCHURCH CITY

כִּֽי־יָ֭דַע דֶּ֣רֶךְ עִמָּדִ֑י בְּ֝חָנַ֗נִי כַּזָּהָ֥ב אֵצֵֽא׃

Otiia e mohio ana ia ki te ara e anga atu ai ahau: kia oti ahau te titiro iho e ia, ano he koura ahau i toku putanga mai.

But he knows the way that I take. When he has tried me, I shall come forth like gold.–Job, The Mystik – being refined under pressure.

Not to be outdone, by supermodel of the world, Rachel Hunter, Oscar winner Russell Crowe is sounding the trumpet too, for the special city of Christchurch.

the part Maori actor in this YouTube video message, ”At 12.51 on February the 22nd, Christchurch, a city that my family’s called home in the past, was ripped apart by a violent earthquake.”

“Christchurch continues to hurt,” Crowe’s message says.

Christchurch is a city that reflects us all in duress and crises. May this special spirit rise to achieve the full potential of purpose that it’s been gifted in the fire of adversities, tested greater than the purest gold or the strongest iron, to lead the world with new things.

In case you missed it, Rachel Hunter‘s message is a real pearla too. She glows… adding to this special spirit rising from the Garden City’s rubble that Russell rightly notes, fosters and ignites in this video.

This spirit is brave, noble, big-hearted, proven and above all resiliently strong and compassionate. Go Christchurch. Thanks Russ.

DANIELLE SPENCER AND RUSSELL CROWE BUY A HOME IN ROSE BAY, SYDNEY

Jonathan Chancellor of The Sydney Morning Herald reports that ‘after a four-year search, Russell Crowe and his wife, Danielle Spencer, have spent $10 million on a Rose Bay property.

The purchase of Te Puke, a 1909 house updated with a 1927 Arts and Crafts-styled second floor, ends the entertainment industry couple’s search for a family home for their two children, now aged seven and four.

Along the way they inspected the $50 million-plus Altona on the harbour in Point Piper in 2007, as well as unsuccessfully seeking pricey inland residence Le Manoir at Bellevue Hill, which fetched $23 million in 2009.

Spencer was keen to spend more, while Crowe, preferring to keep his Woolloomooloo apartment as a bolthole, only wanted to spend a modest amount. The six-bedroom house is set on 1200 square metres overlooking the fairways of the Royal Sydney Golf Club. Te Puke, pronounced ”teh-pook-eh”, is Maori for hill, and last traded at $5.5 million in 2001. Crowe and Spencer snapped it up before its forthcoming auction through Ben Collier and James Dack at McGrath Estate Agents. ”Kent Road properties are among the finest non-waterfronts in the eastern suburbs,” one agent said.

Nice one. Te Puke is also a place name where legendary Indigenous peoples filmmaker, Merata Mita (wife of director Geoff Murphy – Young Guns II) was born and raised. My dad was raised their too. The Hill. How befitting for a Kiwi gladiator of Maori lineage of the South Pacific and his beautiful Aussie wife and family.

SOME WITI IHIMAERA POETRY – OH NUMI TUTELAR – FROM HOLLYWOOD 2.23.11

Oh Numi Tutelar

(At the British Museum, London, 25 June 1998)

3 in the morning
The streets deserted I had forgotten
only derelicts & prostitutes are abroad in the night
forsaken lovers locked out
(and Maori attending dawn ceremonies)

Make way, Britannia, Albion, Victoria Imperatrix,
make way our putatara are braying to bring down
your walls The dawn is coming and with it
Magi, gift bearers from the South

Piki mai, kake mai, homai te wai ora
ki ahau

We have come
from the utmost ends of the earth a tribe of travellers
with our own Queen, ministers & warrior escort
to the land of our Treaty partner where
our treasures have been plundered
(and Roma & I halfway round the world
to read in a stairwell)

Make way, O Egypt, ancient Assyria, Greece, Rome
make way our own Cleopatra comes amid you
Semiramis, Te Arikinui, Imperatrix of Aotearoa
Maori women, gift bearers from the South

Haramai te toki, hui e, haumi e, taiki e

So here we are
climbing upward     the Museum opening unwilling
to the dawn, the kai karanga calling, the warriors
pulling us in & Maramena asks, ìHow can our
culture so small survive in this treasure house
of many cultures?î
(The answer is simple: Godzilla was wrong
size does not matter)

Oh antiquities of Asia, make way, lions of Judah
bow down, Babylon, stela of Islam make way
give space, Oh Nimrod, Horus, Mahomet
we are iwi Maori, gift bearers from the South

E taonga tū mai, tū mai, tū mai

And in the great hall
for the first time we see the past before us
the treasures of our ancestors a Pharaonic ransom
of immense psychic power, indeed we live
with our past the ghosts among us
(How can I explain? We have always walked
backwards into our future)

Oh, ancestors, stand forever! Stand for yesterday!
Stand for today! Stand for tomorrow! Stand
for always! Stand! Stand! Stand!

Take heed, O Gods of all other worlds, numi tutelar
We come chanting, we come singing, we come
proudly from Rangiātea, there our seed was sown
We come, still voyaging by star canoes
by aurora australis

We are from savage islands, far to the south
we move through your constellations
make way and where there is one
oh Gods, there are a thousand

We are Magi, bearing gifts
and our dawn is coming

Ka Ao, ka Ao, ka awatea

New Zealand Herald -The elderly weep as they see the dead, lying in the streets. Heartbreaking. “A total warzone,” is a comment.

(CNN) – A 6.3-magnitude earthquake ripped through Christchurch, New Zealand, on Tuesday afternoon, causing multiple fatalities as it toppled buildings onto buses, buckled streets and damaged cathedrals, authorities said.

New Zealand Police announced a large-scale evacuation of the central city was under way on the agency’s website. According to the news release, the earthquake killed an undetermined number of people at various locations around the city, including passengers on two buses crushed by buildings that had fallen on them.

Laura Campbell told CNN she was at work at the bottom of a six-story building when the earthquake struck. She described seeing “windows blowing out, bricks falling down, people screaming, the whole nine yards.”

‘OHANA – JENNIFER ANISTON DOES ARCHITECTURAL POETRY THIS WEEKEND

Jennifer Aniston is architecturally inclined, apparently. Look at these pics. Although it’s a little bit cruel to be flaunting a home of this calibre, when many Americans homes have been in foreclosure, I guess someone has to do the American dream this week, California styles.

So no harm meant, I’m sure by a movie star’s display of good taste today.

I like the royal blue/ purple taffeta curtains, the royal blue/ purple velvet arm chair and the Chinese O aute lantern effect, lighting up a fire lit bar area room set against slated rock to house Aniston’s vino collection. California like New Zealand has some very good wines, so it’s good to see Aniston celebrating regionality of produce and place in this design aesthetic.

It reads like architectural poetry. The deep blue, gives you a feeling of the ocean, without even being anywhere near one. Somehow your brain thinks you’re near the Ocean of Hawaii, without even being anywhere near it. The trickery of color therapy boggles the mind toggles to think we possess the sea in an interior space whenever the color of deep blue is used dominantly.

Yes this is really one girl whose famous for a love triangle fit for Hollywood tabloids and feel good movies – abode, whose price she’s tripled during recession years to make bank. Not bad. I do believe that’s called smart. Architecturally the home is very poetic.

Reports Richard Lawson of Gawker— “Jennifer Aniston bought the Beverly Hills home she calls “Ohana” (named after a Hawaiian concept of extended family) for $13.5 million back in 2006, spent some $15 million turning it into a Zen palace that feels “like a hug,” put it in Architectural Digest, and is now selling it. Priced at $42 million.

[House pics via Splash News]

Incidentally in the Kanaka Maoli language of Hawaii ‘Ohana means family in an extended sense of the term including blood-related, adoptive or intentional. It emphasizes that family are bound together (community ties, serving the best in and for each others’ unique gifts like a colored diverse korowai or cloak of colors on display in family) and members must cooperate with and remember one another.

The term is cognate to my own people – the Maori of New Zealand’s concept of the term whānau. That word, is too rich to even begin to describe it –is the building block of nationhood and is so expansive and inclusive of others that to describe whanau would be a whole thesis. Many have been written on this fascinating topic.

Whanau is spiritual and love knits it together from the heart. Mana atua (Spiritual guidance), Mana Whenua and Mana Moana (our links to landscape, place and the ocean) also define family, and Mana Tangata (the art of family) are three key concepts in understanding what ‘Ohana and family mean. A cute and very unexpected reference today from Aniston.

YODA MAORI NEWS – API MAHUIKA TALKS THE DIRECTION OF THE NGATI POROU MAORI TRIBE

One Maori leaders words resound from Hollywood today. Api Mahuika, known affectionately to inside tribal members of the Ngati Porou Maori iwi (tribe of Aotearoa), New Zealand, as Yoda, comments on his tribe’s $110 million settlement. Says Api in wise words that many global leaders could take a note from:

“I don’t believe that growing the bank balance at the expense of our people is the way to go.What you have to do while you’re looking at investments is consider where your people sit and where the employment opportunities sit.”

“You are growing your economic wealth on one hand and growing the employability of your people to look after those assets that you are growing.”

“We have many sharks going round and round and you’re in the middle watching the fins. It makes me sick.”

Mr Mahuika says that Ngati Porou, the second largest Maori tribe in New Zealand after Nga Puhi in the far north of New Zealand, are likely to favor these tribally focussed programs:

~ A science of technology and innovation unit, to work with universities to find more efficient and profitable ways of managing farms, aquaculture and fisheries

~A school of excellence focused on tikanga (tribal truth principles of cultural lore) and Te Reo Rangatra (the Maori language of Chiefs). An associated sporting academy would call on the expertise of elite sportspeople from the iwi such as Rico Gear, Rua Tipoki.

~Housing and alternative education.

~Working with schools to develop a science syllabus which would prepare students to work for the tribe in the future.

It’s good to see Maori and the sciences develop along with cultural lore, the best known ideological framework known to best support Maori excellence and top level achievement in the world. Put simply, the knowledge of this tribe’s Maori ancestors, but with the tools of science aligning Ngati Porou with its destiny in the world.

As yet, Nga Puhi, the largest Maori tribe in New Zealand has yet to be compensated for their tribe’s settlement. Although all New Zealanders are one and a very tight community of people as a nation, Ngati Porou’s ‘dodging greedy sharks’ news, gives Ngapuhi and other tribes hope today.

Go Natis! :)

IRINA SHAYK IS SPORTS ILLUSTRATED HOT

Have you caught a glimpse of Irina Shayk‘s hotness yet. Her last name is similar to Sheik (oil barons of the world)- and she has curves like Shakira too. In addition, Irina also happens to date a guy who kicks a soccer ball around for a living, while he father’s mystery love children too. Yes, Irina really does date Cristiano Ronaldo while holding her own on the cover of the iconic 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue cover.

Nice job!

Irina’s latest press sees her acting a cheer leader for Kanye West too, calling his music videos “moving art” instead of well… a music video. That news can be read via Atlanta, Georgia today. Go here for that. Whenever Kanye’s name is mentioned with Irina’s that can only mean one thing, Kim Kardashian is so done with being the bikini girl for America, it’s Irina’s turn this year.

Incidentally in the Maori language – the word “iri” means “to hang suspended upon” and “to rest upon.” Quite cute really as Cristiano Ronaldo let’s this mega-babe of the world hang upon his own star. A good star pairing if ever there was one seen this year.

Irina’s name is Greek and used in English and Russian speaking nations. It means “Peace.” Beautiful.

Our future to express ourselves and be ourselves depended on this woman, to do this for us. This Waitangi Day I celebrate Dame Whina Cooper and my grandparents and their generation of her ilk, feisty spirit, strong heart and fearlessness to be uniquely themselves.

1. I am thankful that my Pakeha dad overcame government policy of the day fourty-six years ago, and saw through its slanted blind-sightedness to see the beauty of my Maori mom, to court her, marry her and honor the spirit of The Treaty of Waitangi, in a real and living way based on true love.

2. I am thankful that “Kia Ora” means hello in New Zealand – and everyone knows it and can say it. Kia ora also means “thank you” and “life be to you.” The Maori language is so beautiful and is upheld and protected by law under The Treaty of Waitangi.

3. I am thankful that early Pakeha descendants of New Zealand learned the Maori language fluently, like Scotsman Robert Graham, Auckland City’s first magistrate. He set an example of Treaty-honoring living in his thought processes, life and actions for all Kiwis to emulate his example. He also was the first New Zealander to promote New Zealand to the world as a high-quality tourism destination too. Not only did he believed that New Zealand’s thermal properties were healing, or New Zealand landscapes spiritual and stunning to be in, but he also believed that Maori people and Maori culture are unique wonders of the world to be in Maori’s presence.

4. Because of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealanders are some of the best kaitiaki (or guardians) of environmental protection and our role as people of the earth, through what has been learned and articulated by Maori scholars, thinkers and leaders in light of Maori peoples key role as kaitiaki of landscape, place, people.

5. Because of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, New Zealanders honoring the concept of ‘Tino Rangatiratanga’ or sovereignty in one’s unique humanness towards Indigenous Maori New Zealanders; all New Zealanders have been deepened to become aware of human rights in the world – and where people’s intrinsic uniqueness is being violated by multi-national corporations, corrupt governments, or, dictators in the world. As a nation, New Zealand excels at being aware of where human rights are being breached globally. We have ‘tino rangatiratanga’ to thank for this awareness perhaps in New Zealand culture.

FOR EZRA’S GENERATION – KEY AT SITE RAMSES II, ABU SIMBEL NUBIA, EGYPT WITH THE WORDS OF ISAIAH

KEY AT SITE RAMSES II, ABU SIMBEL NUBIA, EGYPT with Isaiah‘s prophetic and poetic, lyrical words, written originally in Hebrew, being posted in Hollywood today, especially for baby Ezra and Generation Ezra in the world.

Prophetic poetry – “I will give you the treasures of darkness – I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places… I call you by your name… though you have not known me.”

Words in Te Reo Rangatira, follow:

Ko te kupu tenei a Ihowa ki tana i whakawahi ai, ki a Hairuha, he mea pupuri nei naku tona ringa matau, kia pehia ai e ia nga iwi ki raro i a ia; maku ano e wewete to nga hope o nga kingi; ko nga tatau ka whakapuaretia ki tona aroaro; e kore ano nga kuwaha e tutakina.

NATALIE PORTMAN’S OSCAR MOMENT, ABIGAIL OF CARMEL, RAHM EMANUEL, LEBANON HEZBOLLAH NEWS AND THE HORIWOOD TOP TEN – 1.25.11

The New York Times front page today contrasts Rahm Emmanuel‘s mayoralty hiccups in Chicago with Lebanon‘s new Prime Minister elect being picked by the Hezbolah. I grew up with a Lebanese family in New Zealand (5 generations of family friends now) who intermarried with Israeli people. Today was a significant day in Hollywood for me reading this front page.

What follows beneath our top ten is a story of an interesting woman. Her name was Abigail. As I go to The Abbey restaurant and bar sometimes in West Hollywood on Urban Sundays, I thought Abigail’s story as a key Peace keeper, was well worth a share today from the City of Angels.

Here we go, our top ten most interesting people of the celebrity entertainment news varietal today, as voted demoratically by you worldwide in Hollywood are:

1. One pic – When Chelsea Handler dated Ted Herbert

2. One pic – Before Natalie Portman was pregnant, engaged or Oscar nominated

3. Maori-Kiwi action star super heroes – taiaha art & kowhaiwhai prints appear in Hollywood

4. Lourdes Ciccone news

5. Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez

6. William ShakespeareMegan FoxPink‘s Brit tattoo-ed poetry

7. Jamie Lynn Spears, Casey Aldrige + Twitter

8. Top Cooks – Padma Lakshmi & Caroline Artiss

9. Jenelle Evans - teen mom growing pains news

10. TIE A: Keith Obermann is being cellard from MSNBC – a la Conan O’Brien

10. TIE B: Layla Nurrudin shares a mohawked shout out to San Francisco via Cali

This day in Hollywood was quite significant. Oscar nominees were announced. Today I met an Abigail too via France. Her namesake is listed in the books of Samuel (the first judge of Israel who doubled as the kingmaker of King David – a psalmist shepherd King). Abigail of Carmel was spiritual and described as being “beautiful and intelligent.” Her story can be read here.

The original Abigail of old, was wise, had a spirit of humility (chalk it!) and was a Peace maker. She lived a life free from the perks she ruled over. She fought mean-spiritedness with kindness. In trying circumstances, Abigail was a noble woman in spirit. To King David who was intent on getting revenge on his enemies (he was a bit hoha, a Maori word for done with trying to be fair), Abigail rode out to meet him on a donkey. These were her words in Hebrew, translated into English (Hebrew and Maori words follow too):

“The Lord your God will certainly make a lasting dynasty for my lord, because you fight the Lord’s battles, and no wrongdoing will be found in you as long as you live… Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life, the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he will hurl away as from the pocket of a sling… May you not have on your conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged yourself.”

I thought Abigail of Carmel’s story was timely for the world today. Peace over War for the right reasons, as yet another key to live by and consider in the world. Because the story impacted me as light, I share it with you from Aotearoa-New Zealand in Hollywood, California. Centuries later, Abigail of Carmel is a celebrity in Hollywood today on this blog. What a fine individual she was.

BRETT’S CELEBRITY NEWS FROM HOLLYWOOD – 1.22.11

Photo caption – Brett’s Palm Tree – Melrose & Stanley.

Yesterday, when getting cigarettes at Chevron that are so bad for you, a guy said to the Indian Chevron owner, “Did you know if Mother Teresa was still alive today, she’d be 100 f*cking years old.”

Hearing this sentence strung together like that was so odd – yet the mention of a little old ladies name made everyone in the cue, better people, just thinking about what he said.

Mother Teresa is dead, yet we are not. That was his point. Very cool.

SHOUT OUT TO RANDOM MAORI FULLAS ON FACEBOOK

Random Maori Fullas are two Maori bros who have a Facebook following. They’re very funny guns. Now progressing to merchandizing. I love their tee shirt.

They’re also doing Hollywood shout outs too. I love how the bros have never been to L.A but they know all about it. Lol! Maori are perceptive as a rule, so perhaps they already do. Who knows?!

This one’s for them on their first visit as a warm welcome. They can be found here on ! :)

If my knowledge of Hollywood serves me correctly, this view of the Hollywood sign is taken from below Beachwood Canyon. Definitely snapped on the tourist traps trail well blazed. Love the photo. Black cotton on denim. How could you go wrong? That’s the attire of over half of L.A running errands right there.

I am very excited there are Maori in the Hollywood Hood creating and sharing ‘Hollywood Maori’ culture with the world. Chaa!

Nau mai, Haere Mai ki Te Whenua o nga Toa Waha Nui… Right backatchu! :)

PALM TREES AND GOOD PEOPLE – 1.11.11

Spirit thought for today on a very significant date 1.1.11:

וַתַּבֵּ֥ט עֵינִ֗י בְּשׁ֫וּרָ֥י בַּקָּמִ֖ים עָלַ֥י מְרֵעִ֗ים תִּשְׁמַ֥עְנָה אָזְנָֽי׃ :Hebrew

Te Reo Rangatira: Ka rite te tupu o te tangata tika ki to te nikau; ka rite tona nui ki to te hita i Repanona

English: The good-hearted person will flourish like a palm tree. They will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.

~This one going up in Hollywood in the ‘Nikau’ key of rugby football legend of the world, Mr Michael Jones on 1.11.11. Peace. Posted by Horiwood.Com, Hollywood California USA.~
