What is it about words, that if written in an academic tone, readers/ broadcasters see the words as being true, credible, even if they are nothing but a work of fiction, created just to amuse and entertain.
This story about Rush Limbaugh, showcasing 10 pages of an imaginary thesis titled Aristocracy Revisited supposedly written by a young Barack Obama is a reminder of this fact. The thesis excerpt was actually written by a blogger as a joke and put online, with a fake ‘Time Magazine’ blessing of it.
The debacle of Limbaugh’s 20 million radio listeners, searching for ‘Obama Thesis” is a reminder how any version of ‘truth claims’ are always written, created, manufactured and disseminated and how a sense of “Aristocracy” is always constructed.
But you only need to look at Michael Jackson monarchistic symbols of pop, everywhere at the moment, to see that people love a culture of monarchy, aristocracy of any kind in America and the world.
