~Here’s an uplifting Rugby World Cup 2011 song from Cindy Ruakere if ever you heard one. Let’s go New Zealand.~
When I was 18, I embarked on a nationwide tour for a year on the road 54 weeks, non-stop, as a back up singer. I was a joke, because I can’t really sing too well. However, the touring band liked my look and my team player spirit.
I used to have to sign autographs because kids (namely precocious teen girls with raging hormones) thought I looked like Jordan Knight from New Kids On The Block. As I was only a year or two older than them, to appease their fantasy, I signed my name as a touring “singer.” Nuts. It was the one time, I ever felt a little like a young Elvis.
Our forte was cross-cultural healing, preventing teen suicides, offering hope to rape victims and shaking churches, government agencies and community groups up with a mollywhoppin’ of reality upside the head, while being skilled ‘dawn treading demon crushers’ to boot (don’t ask what that means if you don’t know, but we were up at 5.30 many mornings, doin’ the work!).
We averaged 5 hours sleep a day, stole energy on the road from Moro Bars (chocolate) and Snickers bars too; while we moonlighted as a much loved band, who rocked each city, like the band Starship night after night after night. It was the tour that was never gonna end. Our run repeatedly got extended. Though grueling, it was a lot of fun too. On this tour, we were legend. I had forgotten.
Here’s a blog comment from Louise Sadler - who was one of the band’s fans who became a friend who would travel to other cities outside her home town with a carload of pals to come and see us perform almost twenty years ago. [Louise, ICU]. Thanks for the message:
“Hi Sam, You so look the same. Infact you haven’t changed one bit to look at. You probably don’t remember me but you Emily and C made a huge impact in my life over Rise Up when you guys came through Kawerau. Mel & I have become really close friends over the years. Thanks for leading her to the Lord way back then. She’s in Epsom now and I live in Aus these days.
C told me where you were and so I am just checking out the blog. Do you have a FB page? Louise”
[For Louise and Rise Up posse: Apparently, yes, somewhere I am on FB. Thanks for the msg. Love u lots. Go Maoris in Kangaroo Country. You're winners. How could I forget you Louise, with those Maori brown eyes that see beyond the veneers of skin-shells, into the very lives and hearts of the broken hearted. And, amazingly enough, you can fix them too with your kindness, honesty and wise sensitivity and gentle, gracious spirit. I have always loved your work with people, rock on!]
And, here’s our top ten tonight. With the thoughts: Live well. Eat well. Pray well. Sleep well. Invest well. Dream for future generations. Be the future. Always fight for love.
