GRATITUDE WITH NAOMI CAMPBELL

We are the people we are today, because of those who helped us. Naomi Campbell reflects on the fashion mountains she climbed as a trailblazing supermodel of color, in Interview Magazine.

Cover Awards, brings us her words of gratitude when reflecting.

“Back when she, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangalista, Kate Moss and Stephanie Seymour ruled every magazine cover and catwalk” the golden era of the supermodel 90′s was where Naomi made her name as a young beauty.

“As Campbell says: “We were very supportive of one another, my group of girls, and I don’t think that happens so much nowadays.”

“Honestly, for me it was a blessing to have a friend like Christy. I was so indebted to her for so many things. You know, when I was younger there were certain designers who hadn’t used models of color in their shows, and Christy and Linda said to them, “If you don’t take Naomi, then you don’t get us.” My friends and comrades stuck up for me–and that doesn’t happen in fashion. I will never forget that. I don’t forget what people do. No matter how many years go by, I always remember.”

May we always stick up for others too – who need a friend – and strengthen our friends too, by challenging each other, to do more. Gratitude from Campbell is a good message today. Thanks Cover Awards for the reminder.

PERFECTION IS THIS ONE SHOT OF NAOMI FOR INTERVIEW MAGAZINE

Long before Beyonce stole/ borrowed? her model’s beauty strut and swaggar in that Crazy in Love hit that went off worldwide all Summer long, it was Naomi who smashed color boundaries in the elite world of fashion – reflected in Naomi’s groundbreaking work on Magazine covers.

Here in Hollywood Interview Magazine is percieved as being what only ‘authentic’ artists can land a cover on. It’s like an unofficial off-beat, Vogue or Vanity Fair street cred magazine for A-List actors.

Naomi Campbell owns that spot for Halloween, chews it up and spits it out for breakfast. Proving her trailblazing chops.

I can’t help but remember Ruta Lee sharing over the table at Hamburger Hamlet that “black don’t crack” as her good friend Francis Davis - a widow of the legendary Miles Davis - loves to joke with her. Naomi is proof of this today. In the most tasteful pic of the entire shoot, that sends Lady Gaga back to her diapers as a fashion icon, here’s Ms. Campbell doing the art of “model fierce.”

She is the fashion world’s version of ‘el primo hot chocolate’ or so my African-American brothers and sisters tell me here in L.A, when I get down with them on the d-floor on hot Summer’s night at the Abbey some weekends. They all know Naomi’s signature poses and she’s all up in their cultural i-d too. What an amazing cross-over artist Naomi Campbell is.

IN COURT: NAOMI CAMPBELL ON LIBERIA AND SIERRA LEONE

The LA Times are running with the Naomi Campbell story today. Front Page. Superdmodels testifying in war crimes tribunal court rooms aren’t typically the norm. But Naomi was always the trail blazing type of model, so we shouldn’t be surprised really. In spite of her temper and diva ‘tude, Naomi is doing some good to do in the world by being a star witness against war crimes. Go girl! She sparkles today as a humanitarian. 

This from the Times: ”LEIDSCHENDAM, Netherlands — Naomi Campbell testified before a war crimes tribunal Thursday that she had received some “dirty-looking stones” after a 1997 dinner party with former Liberian ruler Charles Taylor. Still, the supermodel said she didn’t know if the stones were actually diamonds or if the gift came from Taylor himself.

NAOMI CAMPBELL IS OFF THE HOOK

A twenty-seven year old New York cab driver, squealed that supermodel of the world, Naomi Campbell had hooked him in the back of the head while he was driving her around the Big Apple yesterday.

Today however, the New York Times reports that the police are no longer interested in speaking with Naomi about the allegation. They have closed the case and no charges will be filed.

Naomi Campbell who trail blazed a path for women of color in fashion… is off the hook.
