Growing up in New Zealand, I worked on a dairy farm with my dad each day. It was a sunup til sundown existence in my teens with basketball and friday nights in town and rugby football at school. The weird thing about being a country-raised Kiwi kid was that your life was shaped by two realities. The key factors were the weather variables of each season, as well as, market forces of the global economy.
Maybe I’m a little sentimental, because I found this story about New Zealand farmers and their families getting a good pay check this year, to be Hollywood news worthy here in the USA.
“There has been a fundamental change in supply and demand for food internationally which has pushed prices to their current levels,” says Andrew Ferrier, dairy giant company, Fonterra’s, Chief Executive.
What this means for New Zealanders is that exports are up, where as imported food produce is a little steep. The leveler, is that the price of milk has remained the same. New Zealand has the best dairy produce on the planet. I kid you not.
Go Kiwi famers towards a good year.
Although we never get your delicious milk in our Starbucks lattes here in the US, that’s some good news for New Zealand’s rugby football obsessed farming communities and families.
Good country folk set to have a good year this year. Good news!
Believe it or not, country life, is a topic that is indie filmmaker worthy, as in this film clip of Danielle Cormack and Star Trek/ Judge Dredd’s Karl Urban starring in the film The Price of Milk. The film was a little weird, but we liked it in New Zealand.

Born this way – I believe that all children of the world were born to have access to clean drinking water whenever they need it.
BTW: At the moment 1 billion people don’t. 2 million children die through not having access to clean drinking water each year.
Born this way to drink clean water – is these kids and their parents’ dream day. We can make it a dream day everyday for them. Let’s make it happen fun people, by clicking on UNICEF’S TAP PROJECT link. Let’s FLOW! Thanks groovy people.

Dame Helen Mirren says via The UK Telegraph“I prefer the finesse of French humour. English humour is: harsher, more scathing, more cruel and more surreal too, as illustrated by Monty Python and the TV series Little Britain, where situations are far-fetched and over-the-top. England is constantly threatened by a savage assimilation. This isn’t the case with France which remains furiously protective of its culture.”
Well, in an increasingly globalizing world – French snobbery, protecting its culture within ‘language’ is not a bad idea to have an authentic sense of self.

In the studio system, the workings are very much set. More Washington than innovative and welcoming of new people. Hollywood risks stagnation. The savior of Hollywood is young talent, proven enough to no longer be a risk, tougher than most for enduring the system, for convincing the town that they had the staying power to stick around enough to hold their own. Chris Pine is one such man. Listed as new A-List along with Karl Urban of New Zealand who follows closely beside and behind Pine. Hollywood 2010′s.
True fact: The box office rules this town. You can make an art house film – but the town doffs it hat to box office’s big hitters. Of these people (Sir Peter Jackson and James Cameron being two) the wheels of Hollywood spin. Who cities of people are fed. Here’s the latest takings from Nikki Finke:

Chris Pine Covers Hollywood Reporter: Unstoppable star Chris Pine graces the cover of the second weekly edition of The Hollywood Reporter, on stands Wednesday.
Pine is just one of a handful of hot, young Hollywood lights on which the industry is banking to replace the vaunted old guard of box office stars.
Between now and summer 2012, audiences will see Pine, along with a small group of young actors, pushing — and being pushed — into blockbuster star-making terrain.
“We need these kids desperately,” one studio producer tells THR. “And there happens to be a crop of five or six of them that are actually filling the role.”
And clearly the new status has its bonuses. As Pine tells THR, “To have just a bit more power to say yes and no is very appealing and intoxicating.”

Anytime is a good time in Hollywood, to write a David Brown post:
With supportive friends – you can do great things.
Without support, it’s tougher to slice through the apathy, the hatred and doubt – JB, 2010′s
News via West Hollywood. Who exactly is hot on Jerry Brown, Governor Elect of California? Hold up, let’s C:
DreamWorks Founders Host Jerry Brown Fundraiser in WeHo
via Katherine Spiers of The Wrap: “DreamWorks founders Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen hosted a fundraiser for Jerry Brown Thursday night at West Hollywood’s Soho House, 9200 Sunset Blvd, Sunset Strip WeHo.
“The private club, more often the setting for decidedly non-political nightlife, is a members-only institution with another outpost in New York City.
“Thursday’s event was a $5,000-a-head reception, with a private party for donors at the $25,000 level.
“Other co-chairs of the event included J.J. Abrams, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, George Lucas and Rob Reiner.
“Katzenberg, Spielberg and Geffen have a history of publicly supporting Democratic candidates and have hosted fundraisers for Bill Clinton and President Obama.”
Not a bad line up at all of leading Hollywood producer lights, faces and names all in support of Jerry Brown, 72. And of course, Kiwi-Fruit Brown/Green thinking types do too. :) Maori Hobbits fans in this line up, included in West Hollywood. I may not be able to throw money his way, but I can give Jerry Brown support on this blog, with creativity and time.
Like good sheep, yes we brown Maori-Kiwi Polynesians do too. :)

He’s the footballer that knows how to mix up his American history with a wicked sense of humor. TPM has the story:
Jon Runyan, a former pro football Eagles player and now the Republican nominee of the New Jersey 3 District, standing against freshman Rep. John Adler (D-NJ), has added his voice to the recent constitutional jurisprudence of GOP candidates — listing the 1857 Dred Scott v. Sanford Supreme Court decision as a recent case that he disagreed with.
As the Asbury Park Press reports, from a debate last night: “Jon, it’s a different branch of government, but can you give me an example from the last 10 or 15 years of a Supreme Court decision in which you strongly disagree?” Adler asked.
“That I strongly disagree with?” Runyan asked, pausing for a moment to consider the question. “Dred Scott.”
There was some laughter in the audience.”
Hilarious! 1857. Jon Runyan is too funny. As a once-footballer, Runyan, a man who possesses a great sense of sporting football humor, with pace and position, denotes that the real “p” word needed is patience while referencing the jurisprudence system. 1857 references. His sense of humor, is very similar to that of a Maori’s. He is too funny and worthy of a mention today. Loves.
[Speaking of "Dreds." Here's an image of New Zealand actor, Karl Urban, who stars as Doc McCoy in Star Trek films of today, who also doubles as Judge Dredd (Sylverstar Stallone's old role) in the future of Hollywood Superheroes creation and film franchising. LA Weekly, has Dame Helen Mirren doing a version of Hollywood at the big guns rifle range this week. All for show, to demonstrate the united ‘tough as bullets, yet still at war – fighting M.O.” She’s convincing enough with her stoic yet mischief, British poker face on, in this picture.
Dame Helen, is the onscreen stand in for Queen Elizabeth II, in Hollywood cinema texts, these days. She’s always playing the same person, and loves the role. Her vibe, kick ass Regal, with a smile.
I love the tagline in this story. “Classiest. Comic. Book. Movie. Ever. Helen Mirren will cut you. And other awesome-old-people-things.” Too funny.
Oh, and here’s Dame Helen’s costar, Karl Urban of RED hanging out with some super flash Maoris and Kiwis who all love gourmet hori food, in New Zealand. The most fun people ever, naturally.
I want to drop names of who exactly Karl appears with in this line up of talented stars, but I won’t give the full list. Because then I’d look like a snob. And they’d all agree with me, it’s far classier to be subtle, and not drop names. Just show, not tell is how Kiwi’s produce. They do, more then talk.
But I do believe there’s a past Governor General of New Zealand in here, along with a creative writing tutor, who writes stories about coastal dwelling Maori who have a close association to whales, that are so good, that they get 13 year-old debut actors nomimated for Oscars, in my/ our Hollywood hood.
ICU all. Much love. And by the way, I’m about dolphins, whales too, but more dolphins, in this Hollywood era. Like Helen Mirren role playing Regina, in this LA Weekly story, dolphins have a fine sense of fun and play, too. :)

Reports the LA Times today: “Following a multitude of delays, Warner Bros. and co-financing partner Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. have agreed to start production in February on the two Hobbit films (budget $500 million) that serve as a prequel to the blockbuster “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, people familiar with the situation said.
Only one hitch remains, however, and it may not necessarily be a small one. The studios are waiting to announce the greenlight because a labor dispute between director Sir Peter Jackson and the Screen Actors Guild and other performers unions is not yet resolved. The unions have advised members not to work on “The Hobbit” because they claim it’s a non-union production. The parties are hopeful that a resolution is imminent, which would pave the way for the movies to be shot in Jackson’s home country of New Zealand, where “Lord of the Rings” was made and preproduction for the new films is underway.
The first “Hobbit” movie is scheduled to be released in December 2012 and the second the following holiday season, both in 3-D.
Sir Peter is busy I see.

It was Kiwi actor Karl Urban‘s big night in Hollywood for the red carpet premiere of RED. Urban cut his chops on shows like Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules down in New Zealand growing up.
Jodi Foster loaned the event some star presence, which was very sweet of her as the film’s star, Helen Mirren was unable to attend in person.
Karl always looks the same, no matter where he is. Kia ora bro!
According to Kiwi Kylie who emailed earlier today, Karl was on Jimmy Kimmel tonight. That footage coming soon too, in this post – if and when it gets uploaded online. Cheers.

Maori wisdom: “In a very old tree, you may be certain that the sapwood is on the outside, while the heartwood is in the middle… Desolate darkness, desolate brightness. … Care for the land, Care for the people, Go forward.”
Remembering my Hollywood Maori manners today from around the globe. This is what I’m wearing today in West Hollywood, California.
A Maori Koru taonga handcrafted from the Ocean, gifted by Doniece Mackay of Matapouri Bay of the Ngapuhi Maori tribe, who lives in both Rome & Paris, once put around my neck in Wellywood, New Zealand, with the words “You are an international Maori who is meant for the world. This taonga symbolizes our ancestors, who navigated our existence into this world. You, do the same thing”
The taonga rests on a Cotton Force tee shirt, as gifted by Dale Karauria of the Ngati Porou Maori tribe of the East Coast on Dale’s last visit to L.A. Brown cotton stitching on brow with a silver Maori ta moko print overlay.
This post going up for Cliff Curtis, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Temuera Morrison, Karl Urban and Rena Owen as a symbol of tino rangatiratanga, Kiwi ingenuity and in recognition of your abilities to dream big Maori dreams to entertain the world.
To Doniece and Dale–thank you both for being friends in Wellywood, New Zealand long before I set out for Hollywood. I wear you both across my heart. Much love and thanks. Sam xox.

I promised earlier today, that I would post the pic of the Scott Pilgrim film’s billboard that I can spot from my place in Hollywood.
Being positioned in a rather quircke creative and fashionable, yet literary, medical family in L.A, I guess I’ve gotta get my freak on–and entertain American-Maori styles. Because to do anything less, is not how we roll. We’re creative and we entertain.
So, here’s that billboard with the extra edition of Kiwi-Maori lad Karl Urban of Star Trek fame for your entertainment. There’s nothing Coy or McDonalds about Karl. He’s the man.
The point of this post?

Dame Helen Mirren is always such a lady. Love her speel to Fandango at Comic Con, on being operative in Red. A movie that rests on the premise of a darn high tech assassin’s invasion. Helen’s level headed, Oscar winning sensibilities are always so cute and emulative worthy.
Fandango! Whatever Helen is saying must be so working. Red is UP! 430% popularity this week in Hollywood. Nice.

When asked at Comic Con conference in San Diego, about whether J.J Abrams was staying on to direct the Star Trek rebooted film franchise’s next film sequel, actor Karl Urban, who plays Dr. McCoy told Collider this:
“Knowing J.J. I think he will have a pretty tough time handing this baby off to someone else. He was such an instrumental force of nature in delivering that film and creating those characters and ensuring that the Star Trek that was released was not some vacuous special effects extravaganza and that it was a character driven film. My hopes are that he will come back to the director’s chair.”
Karl is pictured here promoting Red at Comic Con with his costars Dame Helen Mirren and Bruce Willis. Urban also confirmed to Bleeding Cool, he has been hand picked to step into the shoes of the upcoming South African filmed, Judge Dredd in the title role. Karl also tells Steve “Frosty” Weintraub of Collider:
“I’ve met with Pete Travis, Andrew McDonald and we’ve had a really wonderful meeting of the minds and long story short, they have offered me the role and we’re in the process of making that happen. To have the opportunity to play such an iconic and enigmatic character as Joe Dredd is a phenomenal opportunity and I’m really thrilled and looking forward to getting into it. Joe as a character has great ironic witty one liners set in this futuristic post apocalyptic world.”
He’s such a Kiwi bro, this guy. I guess I’m always proud of Karl as a New Zealand born Californian, because he’s always done good work in small budget Kiwi films and on New Zealand television series too, like Xena and Hercules as well as big budget New Zealand and Hollywood films.
Karl also happens to be distant family, a cousin-in-law, whose married to my first cousin Aroha‘s daughter. Ironically, (like a lot of Karl’s early work is based on irony entertainment) “aroha” happens to mean in the Maori language “Love” and I help promote an important book called Courage To Love by author Robert Ellis, here in Hollywood – a book with a good message of Peace for the world.
Following Red, Karl will next star in another comic book adaptation film called, Priest. Karl plays the villain, a vampire named Black Hat. An interesting acting career in Hollywood is about playing good guys and bad guys. It’s always good to mix it up, like Karl is for Priest. But he’s most famous for being J.J Abrams star doctor in Star Trek these days, with a legendary following from New Zealand’s Lord of The Rings Oscars winning legacy he brings to the Hollywood table from the land of green paradise, down under. Kia ora bro. Karl is also part indigenous Maori blood too.

As Dolphins in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand are an icon of “forgiveness, healing, prosperity and good fortune, ” I thought this image was a powerful one of strength to beam out today in Hollywood (Star Trek Kiwi styles), in the wake of Jesse James and Sandra Bullock‘s marital woes. Because all couples find at best, they’re only human and inspiration is needed to continue on a journey of love.
So for any couple who have ever known the art of forgiveness, (or who may be choosing to know this art of love in a deeper and more real way) to heal the worst of hurts that can threaten a couples partnership, marriage and relationship; here’s a good message:
“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you. ~Lewis B. Smedes“
Let’s hope Sandy B and Jesse James’ spirits wax strong in love, like these two beautfiul creatures pictured above.
By the way, the best place to go for honeymooners and couples needing some R n R together is the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, where the dolphin is King and Queen of this beautiful tourist resort township made up of 144 beautiful Islands in a warm seaside playground. Check it out, if you feel you could benefit from a jet-a-way vacation with the one you love.
Every Oscar winning actor, should be given a two week vacation for two, [alongwith that golden beaten tinsel trophy shaped in a man's image], to the amazing Bay of Islands, to watch dolphins play well together to ensure some married Oscar winning stars, can uphold family and romantic values at some point. That would be both fun and wise, the best kind of fun and glory of all. :)
The true path forward of any A-List star in the world is to Star Trek a path forward of forgiveness–Horiwood

What’s Kiwi Star Trek actor Karl Urban up to in Hollywood right now?
He’s filming Red with actor Bruce Willis and the lovely Helen Mirren of the UK. Karl plays the role of William Cooper, in a film about this plot line: ”When his idyllic life is threatened by a high-tech assassin, former black-ops agent Frank Moses reassembles his old team in a last ditch effort to survive.”
No one does Die Hard, up against the wall American heroe roles quite like Bruce Willis, and having Kiwi and Brit side-kick buddies for such American heroes is always smart. Hollywood agrees with that casting strategy. Red sounds fantastic already. Let’s trek it out in the free world. You know it.

I have been getting a lot of ‘fan mail’ from students at Universities in New Zealand with comments like “you’re amazing” to “you inspire us, blog on bro.” So, this blog post is especially for you–the emerging think tank in the world–and covers the concept of ‘Tino Rangatiratanga‘ which in my precious Maori language means ‘indigenous self determination.’
Avatar‘s recent inclusion and referencing of the Maori language by Hollywood’s reigning box office king and visionary filmmaker, James Cameron, has cast a global spotlight on Maori and Maori culture again from here in Hollywood and our ways of thinking for the planet culturally and future generations well-being like Cameron’s Na’vi people do in his 3D box office sensation film. Exciting news for Lord of The Rings and Star Trek fans, as Kiwi lad, Karl Urban has been cast in Red.
According to ComingSoon.Net: “Principal photography has begun in Toronto on Summit Entertainment‘s spy-thriller Red, based on the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name by Warren Ellis.
Joining previously announced stars Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker and Academy Award®-winners Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman, are two-time Academy Award®-nominee John Malkovich, Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Academy Award®-winners Richard Dreyfuss and Ernetst Brgnine, Julian McMahon, James Remar and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Red is the story of Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Freeman, Malkovich and Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.”
As Karl is married to my cousin Aroha‘s daughter, this is kinda good news for the Hill and Horiwood whanau back home. Congrats Karl Urban and the cast of Red. Summit Entertainment is a hot film production house to be a part of.
