Todays paper via New York City. Christchurch City residents beneath a devastating aftershock earthquake’s rubble and the people of Libya are on our minds.
I was thinking too, that for over fourty years, Muammar/Moammar Abu Minyar Al-Kadafi has been playing the ‘scary’ guy on a global stage like… forever! Typecasting is a little lame in this show. World leaders have forever been relying on Gaddafi/ Kadafi to make them look good every time he appears in the news as the ‘scary control guy’ of the world. Just a thought. Apparently, a new government is being formed, with Kadafi Sr. on hand to be scary still, if needed. World leaders who know him (eg – the billionaires of the world, I wonder if they find him ‘evil’ as the newspapers do, or ‘a friend?’). But he’s had the starring role as politic’s villain for 4 decades now. Wow! That’s staying power. Barack Obama was a young lad when Kadafi first appeared being mega scary in 1969, that’s how long Gaddafi has been playing the scary guy via Libya. Unbelievable!
I’m sorry if those written thoughts offend anyone, yet I’m just writing that from a city that scriptwrites villains and sets them to cameras and verbage, to sell culture around the world – as Hollywood loves to do.
Like Shakespeare of old used to, we (Hollywood’s studio system) mimick what global leaders (or the perceived ‘nobility’ of a regime of ‘rulers’) do and we parody or try and seriously reflect as reality too, the direction world leaders are heading together, so the average Joe has some cultural continuity in the world at the movies or on their TV screens. I’m an average Joe too, so I should know! It’s just what we do in Hollywood. Apparently, we’re the best at it too.
So forgive me for being so honest with my “Hollywood glasses on” in a democratic nation, sharing an honest opinion. How else could Kadafi have been so ‘evil’ and lasted for four decades then, had this not been the case? I find it hard to read Gaddafi news, because it just means that anyone with shares in oil companies, gets rewarded – that’s what it adds up to, over the past four decades of Kadafi’s story lines he’s produced under a ‘crazy angry turban’ costume-prop, for his mates in the world. Kadafi has no relevance to the average Joe, who just lost their car or house, or, sister or mother or brother under a pile of rubble in a city hit by a quake. Neither does he have relevance to the poor of Libya, or the world either, who still struggle to make ends meet each week in the grocery carts. I don’t find him scary. I see him as a ghost of the past still playing ‘the West’s devil’ in a lame show, still going.
Getting back to this front page of the newspaper though, my heart is actually gutted for Christchurch people and the little people in Libya at this minute. There’s just no words. In Christchurch – this is REAL news. What can you do, except pray.
