Nikki Reed & Taylor Lautner are close on New Moon

Rehearsals for the Twilight sequel New Moon are due to begin in Vancouver this week, and Nikki Reed—who plays vampire Rosalie Hale—is particularly glad to be working with co-star Taylor Lautner again.

Lautner, die-hard Twilight fans will remember, was in serious danger of being bounced from New Moon because he lacked the physically to play the bigger, older Jacob of New Moon. Until the 17-year-old hit the gym and bulked up extra muscle to his frame.

“I’m so proud of him,” Reed tells People magazine. “Everybody knew he was going to have to fight for this.”

Reed adds that the cast “were all on edge” waiting to find out if Lautner made the cut. “It got closer and closer, and it was heartbreaking. Kristen[Stewart] and I were in Africa when we got the call saying he got the part. She’s so stoked.”

Reed also dishes to MTV.com about the improved hair and makeup that the Cullen clan will get in the Twilight saga’s second installment, thanks to new director Chris Weitz and an expanded budget.

“I think it will be a little bit different, and we’ll perfect it for the best,” Reed offers. “I don’t know if we necessarily got it right the first time around.”

Reed largely blames weather conditions for the substandard hairstyles sported in the first Twilight movie.

“We all had hours of hair and makeup in the morning, and then when we showed up on set, it was raining,” she recalls. “And because we are vampires, we can’t shoot in the sun! So, we were always shooting when it was cloudy, and then there was hail, and the makeup was pouring off. It was an experimental process—now, I think, we are more prepared.”

As for her own hair in the sequel, Reed proudly admits that she’ll be going with faux locks this time.

“My hair fell out [while filming Twilight],” Reed admits. “It took 36 hours initially to make me blond, and every other day, I was bleaching my head and my skin. This time around, we are testing out different wigs and stuff.”
