LIAM NEESON IN “THE GREY”

Liam Neeson has overcome personal tragedy to continue making movies. The story of this family man has captured the world’s attention. He’s a movie star the world loves.

The Hollywood Reporter asks if Liam can hold his own at the box office against the Sam Worthington & Elizabeth Banks and Katherine Heigl headlining films, opening the same weekend as Liam’s film The Grey.

Pamela McClintock pens: “Billed as an action-thriller, The Grey has picked up steam in recent days and could win the weekend. Tom Ortenberg’s Open Road Films is distributing the Joe Carnahan-directed pic, which cost $25 million to produce.

The Grey, also starring Frank Grillo and Dermot Mulroney, is about a group of men stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. Open Road is counting on Neeson’s relatively new-found status as an action star– Taken and Unknown turned into box office hits–to lure moviegoers.

Open Road is predicting a $10 million to $12 million opening for The Grey, but most box office observers believe it could do more based on good word of mouth and strong reviews. That’s why some believe it will bet holdover Underworld: Awakening, which debuted to $25.3 million last weekend (the Awakening films tend to see sizeable drop offs).

The Grey was produced by Liddell Entertainment and Scott Free Productions.”

My commentary: The USA is “ice obsessed” at the moment. Everytime US movie goers get in a car, ice terrains are on many Americans minds. I think Liam stands a good chance at opening strongly at the box office. What do you think?
