LETTERS: RE: ‘AMERICAN IDOL CONQUERING A DIVIDE’

krisallenwinsAmericanIdolThe LA Times article portrays the friendship between “American Idol” finalists Adam Lambert and Kris Allen as “unlikely” and describes them as “seeming polar opposites.” It contends that each has fans who “should be rooting for the other.”

These observations are true only if one ascribes to the narrow parameters of stereotypes of religion and sexual orientation; most human beings do not fit these caricatures. The majority of Americans gladly put aside their differences and appreciate one another for who they are. This “new tolerance” may be attributed to the Obama administration, but ordinary folks have known this all along: Most people are kind to one another.

Unfortunately, conflict–not kindness–makes front-page news.
