Good PR protects and counsels with thoughtful wisdom

PR TIP # 21: “Fame is often a substitute for loneliness. It is God and not fame, that sets the lonely in true families. Family will always be the height of true fame. Good PR will support family, always. In the mode of Barack Obama, nations are families connected to other families on the earth. PR the earth and make its well being known. That is true and meaningful fame, towards our collective fortuitous future.”

by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.

PR TIP #22: Stars who have longevity, are stars with a great sense of humor. Knowing that the fame game is not real, it is created. A true star, with a sense of humor can navigate any hurdle in the fame game. Laughter is the secret elixir to prolonged popularity. Nicole Richie, when she was accused of being talentless and famous for nothing, took the bull by the horns, appeared on the cover of BlackBook and said: “I don’t know why I’m famous either.” So Warhol and so funny! Her talent is her smarts in being noticed, and her cheeky spirit, that inspires.  Funny is always good PR.

PR Tip # 23:  ”A good publicist, lives each day with a passion to tell good people about other good people doing good things; about good products that make life better,  more meaningful and useful. A good publicist is simply an advocate. They are a prophet to the future of the world. I think of Martin Luther King’s I Have A Dream speech, where he PR-ed something that wasn’t on the steps of Washington’s great mall and proclaimed it, so that it was.”

by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.

PR  TIP # 24: “A good publicist  thinks on their feet, for the good of the people they represent. Veteran Hollywood PR  expert, Elliot Mintz springs to mind. When wayward socialite, Paris Hilton, got arrested for her DUI in Hollywood and was facing imprisonment if convicted, Mintz instructed Paris via phone, to tell the press, that she had been going to get an In N Out burger. The subtext being, “I am guilty of a crime, but I will be In N Out of jail in no time.” This was the case, after only 10 days in klink, when Paris Hilton catwalked out of jail to a paparazzi blitz. Mintz is part angel (messanger) and witty protector. Most of all, he’s adept at thinking on his feet in nanoseconds. We like that in Hollywood!”

PR TIP # 25: “When all say you can’t, a good publicist will find a way to overcome the fear and doubt, and say Yes We Can! Barack and Michelle Obama were the publicists for much needed change, long before they became  The President and First Lady of America.”

by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.

PR TIP # 26:  ”Word of mouth is the best PR. But a good publicist must create the plot points, so that others can talk about it with their  mouths. Rahm Immanuel in Washington is adroit at doing this as Chief of Staff for Barack Obama. He’s a study in creating great PR that everyday people talk about, themselves and propagate.”

by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.

PR Tip # 27: “A good publicist, is happy about being invisible. The glory goes to the client, so that a PR can get on with the next cluster of amazing strategies. It’s about constantly offloading brilliance, behind the scenes.”

by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.

PR Tip # 28: A good publicist does not need a publicist. They are their own publicist. Angelina Jolie technically does not have a personal publicist. She just lives her PR strategies and they work. In fairness, she does use Brad Pitt’s PR to her advantage from time to time; but Angelina is a study into what great and lasting, meaningful PR truly means.”

by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.

PR  Tip # 29: The two best tools in PR that a publicist can gift their client to move themselves, their products and their services forward more quickly are the words: “thank you” and “I’m sorry.” A publicist encourages their client to say: “Thank you for giving me the opportunity to present my product to you” and “I’m so sorry, that you never got exposed to its fantasticness any earlier than now.” You know that’s it’s all about spirit to promote something well, but always with a spirit that engenders gratitude and appreciation.

by Sam Cruickshank, from the book, In The Presence of A Gorilla: 1001 Things About Hollywood PR.

PR Tip # 30: PR has ego embedded in it. Rapper Kanye West’s PR, says “I Am King. I Am because I Am, therefore I Am Here.” No matter whether we like or dislike Kanye West’s ego, he always makes headlines for the bold  statements he makes. A good PR ego, has a healthy element of boldness to  it. Necessary because change and the new, blast out the old and usher in the new. Boldness goes before goodness and the gift of change. Ego, can be a positive force before change occurs with beneficial PR.”
